“Three Tuns Welcomes”
Reviewed 15 February 2013

This old building has been welcoming guests for a couple of hundred years and continues to do so very well. It is only suitable for those who are reasonably mobile as there is no lift and there are steps and stairs.Stepping into the hotel is a bit like walking into a Dickensian Christmas card with warm fires, wooden features, stained glass, olde worlde glass (not all faux I suspect), grandfather clock..you get the idea. The place is clean and warm and nice even if showing its age. If you want the generic motel look then this is definitely not for you, but if you are looking for a place with character and genuinely friendly staff then look no farther. And did I mention the free parking at the back? Limited (what isn't?) but I have found no trouble getting a space both times I've been. Breakfast is a few cereals and muesli,apples/bananas, juices etc and yogurts plus the usual full English or I think other items. All delicious. Baths are old but clean and functional with integral shower. Even at the front of the hotel (we could see the cathedral tower and a few inches of the river from 213) the noise was minimal and I had some great sleeps!
The location is just perfect. A minute takes you onto the footbridge (Elvet bridge?) and you're right in the middle of things with easy strolls to market, castle, cathedral stacks of eateries (try the Thai one near the river) or the Italian pizza place a short drive..parking is awful though..next to the Travel Lodge. Couldn't believe how cheap it was and tasty.
Also head for the Durham Uni's botanic gardens (keep going uphill from the hotel) if you want a nice wee cafe to have baked spuds, soup and gateaux.

Room Tip: If you are sensitive to noise ask for a back one. I didn't suffer from noise at the front but I...

The staff were all friendly, welcoming and very helpful. The hotel was very clean (an absolute must) so it doesn't matter that the decor is not top notch. Our room (112) was at the back, pleasant and quiet - apart from the first night when giant bins were moved across the car park, passing just below our window.
The meals were good and excellent value - apart from the side dishes of vegetables which were overcooked and flavourless.
The city centre, cathedral and castle are just a short walk across the nearby bridge.
Our 2-night DBB deal was excellent value and I thoroughly recommend it. The hotel manager can be proud of his staff.

Room Tip: Rooms at back have minimal sound of traffic, but bins are moved noisily some nights.

This lovely old hotel was charming. The reception staff were ever so friendly and very helpful. The bedroom, although dated, was adequate, clean, warm and comfortable. The breakfast was very tasty indeed. The hotel is located in the very heart of the city and has lots of character. If you wish to stay in a hotel with an old feel of this beautiful, beautiful city.....then the Three tuns Hotel is the place for you. We enjoyed the whole experience. Thank you.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the rear of the hotel if you are a light sleeper as road and late night activity o...

This hotel needs a wholesale overhail. Carpets are tatty, held together with tape in a lot of places. Room 63 has broken bath fittings, poor repairs to the grouting smeared on the side of the bath, spasmodic hot water. Breakfast sausages uneatable and porridge indescribable. Staff are nice though.,

Room Tip: Rooms 61 and 63 are the ones we used, they were awful

ROOM 62.
Stayed here last night as we were at a friends special birthday party. after you get past the quite tired and worn out reception and public areas and into your room your heart will fall.

on opening my room door the first thing i seen was a big patch from there there has obviously been a leak in the past with no attempt to cover it up. the bathroom was no better, from mouldy black grout, the sealant around the bath was cracked, when showering the bath squeeked and creaked cracked sink basin and tired flooring. There is not one step you can take in the room with a creaky floorboard (which means neighbouring rooms are the same and they will wake you up)
I cannot understand why sawllow hotels has let this hotel get into this state? sheer disrepair and neglect. as another review states, there are ample hotels which are competition to this which i would have prefered to stay in.

there was also staining on the headboard, which i HOPE is from the leaking ceiling, and not a previous guests rendevous.

Room Tip: Book a different hotel. the bad reviews of this hotel are the accurate ones.

We stayed at this hotel on a special offer of £59 dbb for 2 nights This was definately great value for money. Yes hotel is quite run down but it is very clean. The evening meals weregood with good choices and plentyof vegetables and the breakfast were very good apart from the bacon which was like eating cardboard but the choices of cereal, toast, jam, more than made up for this. Now for the staff I dont think Ihave stayed in any hotel to compare to the staff at The Three Tuns Every single memberof the staff here were absolutely brilliant reception bar staff the lovely little waitress serving our food Icant single anyone out as they were equally great There was a lot of traffic noise through the night which kept me awake quite a lot

We stayed here 23rd-27th december. We were looking forward to a nice xmas break relaxed with good food a lovely christmas atmosphere and a general good christmas. That we didn't get! The food was absolutely disgusting, all frozen or pre-packed nothing not even breakfast fresh, you couldn't even smell toast cooking! The poor non residents that had actually paid to come in for christmas dinner must have been totally deluded. The room we stayed in was large and ok, the bed uncomfortable, the bathroom needed a deep clean layers of soap scum around taps and grout. Photos of the hotel show open lit raging fires, so not so! One lit hidden away. I had emailed the hotel before our stay as i'd read the reviews and was a little concerned but they emailed me back and told me not to worry and how others had enjoyed festive breaks with them and they were sure we would too, but we really did not enjoy it and was really glad to be going home. Please please do not waste your money on a festive break or any other kind of break at this hotel because you will be disappointed. I feel sorry for the staff bringing you your meals and saying ENJOY this food cannot be enjoyed and to call it browns RESTAURANT is a joke surely COOKING has to take place in a RESTAURANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: NONE NONE NONE If you have to stay take a room at the rear of the hotel. No view well only of the b...

I am disappointed to hear of the problems that you encountered at the hotel.I worked over this period and received no negative comments as regards the food.I must assume therefore that you did not make your feelings known at the time ,which would have given us the opportunity to resolve the matter.Thank you for taking the time to pass on your observations.
