I don't normally do a review until I am ready to travel elsewhere and then remember to post about a previous trip but the experience here was so poor we hope we can save someone else from the experience.
We were only booked in for one night but that was enough. The receptionist was very friendly and the downstairs (a facade) promised a pleasant stay but that about where it ended. The room faced the road to the front but after 20 mins of being in the room I had to feel the glass to see if it was really there as it was so noisy through the late afternoon and through the night, not good.
I then turned the duvet on the bed down (another facade) to reveal a bed sheet that resembled a crisp packet , well slept in with accompanying hairs on the sheet of the last occupant !! Immediate apologies from the receptionist followed by the dispatch to our room of a couple of young boys who changed the bedding and apologised by saying they had over 40 rooms to service and had been busy. I could have accepted this as a simple oversight BUT the bed had been made up to appear fresh rather than missed altogether.
The bathroom was dirty too, mold around the bath/ shower sealant and tiles, a rusty nail poking out of the bath panel, grubby marks on the wall above the loo not to mention dripping taps and shower.
The walls between the rooms are quite thin. Although I'm not complaining about the group of ladies who had enjoyed a good night out and talked to each other in normal voices about it for an hour in the small hours but with the noise from the street, sleep was almost impossible.
Breakfast was average, grubby tablecloths on the linen under the paper type covers. The managers compensation was to deduct a third from our bill but only from the balance owed not including the complete price as we had paid a small deposit. It was only a few quid and to be honest we accepted it to get away.
I was really surprised how shabby this was considering this is supposed to be part of the Swallow Hotels chain in a city like Durham. I would have slept better in the car and it would have been cleaner too. Strong words I know but all true , don't be fooled by a central location its not worth it.
