“Shabby chic minus the chic ! oh and dirty !!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 March 2013

I don't normally do a review until I am ready to travel elsewhere and then remember to post about a previous trip but the experience here was so poor we hope we can save someone else from the experience.
We were only booked in for one night but that was enough. The receptionist was very friendly and the downstairs (a facade) promised a pleasant stay but that about where it ended. The room faced the road to the front but after 20 mins of being in the room I had to feel the glass to see if it was really there as it was so noisy through the late afternoon and through the night, not good.
I then turned the duvet on the bed down (another facade) to reveal a bed sheet that resembled a crisp packet , well slept in with accompanying hairs on the sheet of the last occupant !! Immediate apologies from the receptionist followed by the dispatch to our room of a couple of young boys who changed the bedding and apologised by saying they had over 40 rooms to service and had been busy. I could have accepted this as a simple oversight BUT the bed had been made up to appear fresh rather than missed altogether.
The bathroom was dirty too, mold around the bath/ shower sealant and tiles, a rusty nail poking out of the bath panel, grubby marks on the wall above the loo not to mention dripping taps and shower.
The walls between the rooms are quite thin. Although I'm not complaining about the group of ladies who had enjoyed a good night out and talked to each other in normal voices about it for an hour in the small hours but with the noise from the street, sleep was almost impossible.
Breakfast was average, grubby tablecloths on the linen under the paper type covers. The managers compensation was to deduct a third from our bill but only from the balance owed not including the complete price as we had paid a small deposit. It was only a few quid and to be honest we accepted it to get away.
I was really surprised how shabby this was considering this is supposed to be part of the Swallow Hotels chain in a city like Durham. I would have slept better in the car and it would have been cleaner too. Strong words I know but all true , don't be fooled by a central location its not worth it.

Room Tip: Choose another hotel !!! if you have to stop here have a room overlooking the rear car park

I remember dealing with your justified complaint and making an offer that was accepted.I am a little suprised that having supposedly resolved the matter you have placed this comment.

Second time I have stayed here. It's in a good position, the staff are friendly and helpful and it is a good place for a low cost hotel accomodation in the centre of town. But the whole hotel is tired and maintenance is poor. Both times, the bathroom fan did not work, plugs don't keep the water in the bath, and more water comes out of the wrong places in the shower than in the right places. Give them credit, we complained about the misfitting sheets on the bed, and they were changed faster than you could say Marriot or Ibis. The litter behind the armchairs was a little bit of a turn off, and the in room TVs are so retro.

Only when you arrive, do you find that the hotel is in administration (our equivalent of chapter 11 for the Americans) so if something needs any expenditure to be fixed, it probably wont't be. The dining room was closed when we arrived - maybe something had happened and the adminstrators do't want to spend a penny more than they have to.

This could be a reallly great hotel. Let's hope the management company get a grip and sort it out and make it a good hotel again.

You cannot beat the location , it's so central for exlporing the shops , river walks and the cathedral. Very central for the many excellent pubs as well, reccomend the Dun Cow on Old Elvet.
Three Tuns is a lovely old building with loads of character, we stayed in room 217, quite noisy but doesn't bother us too much.
As the previous comments state the hotel is a little tired and could do with a lick of paint and curtains replacing but our room was very cosy to get back to after a cold stroll around Durham, perhaps a bit too warm as we couldn't turn the radiator down. A bit more heating in the dining room would be good, looks really cosy but quite cold. Overall though it was great value for money as we had the breakfast and evening meal package . Dining room staff are lovely.
Don't know where the comments are coming from about the breakfast, we thought it was delicious and plenty to fill up on. As I say, for £75 PP for 2 nights bed breakfast and evening meal you cannot fault it.
We would certainly book there again when we next visit Durham.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back would be quiter

Wanted a short winter break somewhere different. Came on a Superbreaks Trip half board. Hotel was pretty basic, room was quite a distance from reception, room was not the best, couldn't get the window to stay closed, curtains all torn and black mould on the bathroom roof. Very noisy overnight sounded like air conditioning system but when I asked receptionist what it was she said "I don't know". Positives were that the staff were very friendly and the food was really very good. Nice town, beautiful cathedral.

Having stayed recently at this hotel and taken numerous photographs feel a visit from health and safety would be appropriate, the bedroom wardrobe door was hanging off its hinges as was the curtains off the rail and completely torn. We seen the lovely photos of the dining room on the net when booking and was put in a large room with stains on the carpet fir our evening meal get a nice Restraunt for breakfast. The dining rooms ceiling was damp and patchy and looked like it may collapse any minute. some of the waiters looked like their uniforms needed a good wash. The car parking was unsafe as a large central reservation area was used by mini bus therefore it was not safe to reverse out. our opinion and many others this weekend were that of faulty towers. Even our duvet was all torn and needed replaced five minutes after our arrival ( which was promptly done) as this was a treat weekend I did not want to cause a fuss when paying but will contact the hotel for at least some reimbursement. Will not stay again.

Room Tip: None I can give

We have, in the past, stayed at the Royal County but their prices are now very high and they even charge for parking.

Yes, the Tuns is a bit tired in places, especially the bathroom, but for the equivalent of £30
D,B&B pppn it was terrific value for money. The staff, particularly those waiting on at meal times, were friendly and efficient. Overall, we had a lovely two nights' stay.

Room Tip: We were in 113 on the front. Lots of noise at bar closing time on Sunday night but far better on Mo...
