Better than mediocre, but overpriced, especially by U.S. standards. Friendly staff, comfortable bed, relatively clean bathroom. A good breakfast.

The wife and I booked into this hotel for two nights. On arrival the girl in reception was extremely helpful and attentive. The room was well set out although some of the furniture had seen better days. The restaurant was nice and the staff very good. The food was also very good and well presented. The location of this hotel is also good because there is free parking and you are only a short walk away (albeit up hill) to the centre. There are a number of pubs and coffee shops near by. All in I would rate this hotel quite highly as we got a good deal.

Down on business on a Sunday night after a drive from glasgow and 3 hour survey of a nearby premises.

Hotel reception area looked fine, a nice atmosphere and could hear a bit of the students who were having a dinner but all sonded fine and good natured, not a problem. Check in was efficient and found the room easily enough although it hadn't been cleaned. bed unmade, towels in bath. I had very heavy survey equipment with me as well as my overnight bag and camera bag so was a bit pee'd off at having to go back to reception.

They were, to their credit, utterly aghast and soon found me another room......which was inferior. I was too tired for an argument so lived with it. Shower was crap though and after a 3 hour survey I feel sweaty and want a good drench which I didn't get.

Didn't pay for expensive breakfast.....there are plenty of nearby places offering better for less money.

Slept well though, no complaints in the bed department, very comfy.

They need to sharpen their act a bit and touch up the tired looking rooms.

Swallow Hotels are doing a great value short break - two nights dinner bed and breakfast per person. That's for both nights.

Other people have commented about noise. The hotel is right on a busy road so ask for a room at the back of the hotel.

Room was large and comfortable

Breakfast was good.

Dinner was OK - not fine dining but we both enjoyed dinner each night. Not impressed with the wine. Expensive and poor quality. I guess they do not sell much wine. They couldn't find the wine list when I asked for it in the bar on the first night. I didn't bother on the second night and I wasn't offered the wine list with the menus.

The hotel is 100 yards from the city centre so park the car at the hotel and leave it.

If you are thinking of a short break in Durham, go for it. It really was great value.

Just returned from a two day break at Three Tuns and was very pleased with the hotel. Generally in need of updating but staff were brilliant, food good, big clean, comfortable rooms and very convenient for the city centre so no driving or taxis. Some very good deals on two/three day breaks.

If you do some research you'll be prepared for an old building with old-fashioned furnishings in the somewhat shabby reception area. However, the advantages outweigh these small details.

The location is excellent. It takes about 30 seconds to cross the road and go over the bridge and then you're into the old town. Because the hotel is outside of the old town, there is no hassle at night from all the young people milling around shrieking and giggling. Being nearly next door to the Police Station probably helps too.

Parking is free, unlike the Radisson where I nearly booked. The Three Tuns is in a better location anyway.

The bed was extremely comfortable and I slept well. The bathroom was adequate with lots of hot water and good pressure.

Still on the plus side, we booked two rooms. It says on their website that every room has a fridge: one of them did not. The fridge-free room also lacked a suitcase stand. I asked for, and got, a fridge and suitcase stand that evening despite their health and safety protestations about not being allowed to lug fridges upstairs - which I took as a joke, since they had already offered to lug all the heavy suitcases upstairs.

On the minus side, there is no lift. People who have a problem with stairs would be better advised to stay elsewhere, perhaps. I only tried breakfast once and was, frankly, shocked. The "continental buffet" seemed to consist of packets of cereal, orange juice, and tubs of yoghurt plus prunes or apricots. No meats, cheeses, breads, toast, eggs.......for that you have to choose off a menu which claims that all the breakfasts are freshly cooked. They are not. My bacon tomato and poached egg had clearly been cooked some time earlier and kept warm waiting for someone to order it. As a result it was all dried out. Even the coffee wasn't hot. I didn't go back for breakfast and certainly not evening meal.

There is no need to eat there in the evening anyway: Durham is full of eating choices. We had a Mexican one evening near the Gala Centre (which is much nearer than I thought it would be); a French another evening, a Spanish another evening which was so delicious that we went back to that one; and a pizza another evening. All these restaurants are within 5 minutes walk of the Three Tuns, literally.

Other inaccuracies on their own website are, significantly, the location, which is very odd. The Three Tuns is in New Elvet as shown correctly by Google Maps. There is no internet access at this hotel unless you bring your own lap-top, but since I didn't I cannot vouch for that. Indeed, there is no free internet access anywhere at all in Durham, which surprised me. You'd think that such a famous university town would have at least one internet cafe. You don't necessary get a fridge in your room unless you ask for one and persist, and there is no fresh milk and mineral water in the room despite what Swallow say on http://www.swallow-hotels.com/hotels/three-tuns-hotel/features/room-information.aspx

All the staff I met were helpful and friendly. I would return to the Three Tuns but I'm glad we were in Durham when the University was not in term-time.
