This was our second visit to the Royal Oak and as with our first visit we were warmly welcomed. Sonya and Ian are lovely hosts - welcoming and not intrusive. The rooms are modern, comfortable and very clean. The food lovely. It is a place we will visit again in the future.

Stayed at the royal oak on saturday 7th of september and we would highly recommend to anyone. When we first arrived we were welcomed by a busy pub in the middle of the country, at first we were quite interested to know as to why everyone wore wellies but then were told that a country show had been on in the next village. After we found a seat and got a drink from the bar we were straight away welcomed and involved in the conversation by the friendly locals. It was a lively atmosphere and a fun night. Although the rooms could have done with abit of a tlc the cleanliness of them was brilliant, fresh white towels, clean and fresh bedding, tea and coffee station with plenty if choice and a lovely breakfast Can't wait for our next visit to durham as we would definitely be stopping here again. Many thanks x

Me and two friends cycled John o Groats to Lands End, on a really stressful day of problems we stumbled across the Royal Oak. The locals were very friendly, making us feel very welcome. Even though we arrived on a Monday when they didn't serve food, they were more than willing to make sure we had food by giving us a variety of takeaway menus. Even though we had to leave that Morning by 5am the landlord ensured we had plenty of cereals to hand before we left. Overall we would strongly recommend the Royal Oak. Thank you!

Sadly we only stayed for one night but we feel we must comment about this place. First our room, very clean and a comfortable double bed. The food is home cooked and very tasty and I would recommend the lamb chops, my god they are big. Sonia told us a story about why lamb chops were big and it turned out these sheep where specially bred to feed the locals during the war, lol let Sonia tell you the story. The bar - good range of drinks at a low price. The Locals - If you want to meet and talk to genuine people from the north this is the place to go as we were lucky to meet group of young people celebrating an 18th Birthday in the bar who made our stay even better. One of them the next day drove us to collect our new vehicle from Peterlee (approx 30 miles) to save us the cost of a Taxi fare as we had travelled up on the train, thank you. We liked this place so much we will return but next time we will stay for longer.
