“Lovely traditional Bed And Breakfast.”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

What a little Gem! Loved staying in this comfortable, friendly, and relaxing Bed and Breakfast. Welcoming greeting from the staff. The Family room was perfect. My ten year old daughter loved the bunk beds. Clean bed linen, spotless modern toilet and shower. Everything you needed. The evening was delightful, spent relaxing, listening to some musicians who came in, and the evening meal was wonderful. We had a dog and even she was made welcome. The locals were very nice too. Special thanks to Sonya and the staff. They really do deserve lots of thanks for making our stay comfortable and enjoyable. We only stopped there one night but it will be remembered. And the breakfast!!!Wow. Set us up for the day. Great views surround it and even the view from our room was lovely....Thank You.

We stayed here for just one night en route from Yorkshire to Liverpool. Very friendly place, with warm greetings from Sonia and good cheer from Ian. Locals in the bar also very friendly. We were made to feel at home.

Room was ok, with comfortable bed, good wifi and ok shower. Nice to be overlooking a field in the countryside. Both evening meals and breakfast were hearty affairs, with generous proportions provided cheerfully. Meals otherwise unexceptional.

On innkeeper advice, we used a park and ride to visit nearby Durham city, which was very easy to do. The Inn is a good distance from Durham itself, so do not choose to stay here without a car if you want to visit the city.

This was my first gala, so I needed a one night stay. The Royal Oak was the first one that I tried
and to my surprise got a room straight away. After a 5 hour drive from the Forest of Dean and
some magnificent countryside around Lanchester, I arrived feeling rather tired and jaded.
After a very friendly greeting from the landlady Sonia, this hungry traveller was given breakfast, instruction and a lift to Esh Winning just in time to get the Bus to Durham.

The offer to stay in one of their chalets was much appreciated and after a couple of pints in the evening I had a goodnights sleep. Breakfast was well cooked and enjoyable.

Room Tip: The chalet or annexe room was brilliant, especially if you want a bit of privacy.

We stayed here for one night on 28th June 2014. When we were showed our room our first impression was how damp and musty it smelt. The outside of the building badly needs a paint job as does the inside. The toilets had tiles missing and the sink was hanging from the wall! We had a game of pool and there was no white ball. At breakfast we asked for a pot of coffee when she bought it to us it was only a pot of water. We asked for toast and she forgot to bring that to us. The only good thing I can say is that the owners and locals are all very friendly folk.

We only stayed for one night, but had a great time, lovely place for dogs and they can stay free! We went for a lovely walk, came back had a few drinks then decided to have a meal, was great and plentiful, we then went to bed all fed and watered to wake up to a fabulous full English breakfast! Great price for a great stay....

I together with another chap spent three days in Co Durham for some walking, sightseeing with a little historical research, during which time we stayed three nights at the Royal Oak. Outstandingly good in every respect. Beds, food and ale were excellent and one could not have been made more welcome by Sonia and Ian who run the pub. We were quickly accepted by the locals who could chat on any subject and held many varied views and opinions together with a remarkable historical knowledge of the area.
If you want to escape the world, relax, and get to know the area and the wonderful people in this part of the world, the Royal Oak is a must stay.. Haven't mentioned the pricing, the value for money is outstanding. Do ask about the publications relating to Durham Cathedral printed by Ian Copinger they are brilliant.

For many years (20+) I have had a preferred place when visiting the North East. However because they are running a cheap promotion it is impossible to get in these days, so I have been looking for alternatives. The Royal Oak is a little Gem, you are immediately made welcome by Sonia and Ian. Everything is clean and modern although some of the paintwork needs fixing in the rooms. Minor complaint. Breakfast was excellent and the evening meal also excellent. Good selection of Beers available but unfortunately they have the new artificial Guinness ( Another pub that believed the Guinness Rep that it tasted good, :-) ) A very welcoming place to which I will return, hopefully quite soon.

Room Tip: I don't think it matters you are in the heart of Co Durham
