Owner description: Durham Castle is unique building with 900 years of living history. Today not only is it a Grade I Listed Building, a Museum but it is also the home to University College, the founding College of Durham University and over 100 students are resident during term. The unique nature of the building means that, entrance to the public is by guided tours only. However, this allows a personal experience that brings history to life. The following tour times are a general guide as it is sometimes necessary to cancel tours at short notice due to University or commercial activities. During term-time: every afternoon at 1.15pm, 2.15pm, 3.15pm and 4.15pm.During university vacations: daily 10.15Am, 11.15Am, 12.15am, 1.15pm, 2.15pm, 3.15pm and 4pm. Please check the tour times with Palace Green Library or the World Heritage Site Visitor Centre to avoid disappointment.

Many world heritage historical sites provide at least some access. Durham Castle fails to provide even a minimum experience for people who use wheelchairs

“Not to be missed!”
Reviewed 6 October 2013

We were very lucky to have an excellent student guide. Our American student was well informed, interesting, with excellent delivery and a great eye for detail. Wowed by the Norman Arch - one of the best examples in Europe and humbled by the Norman Chapel underneath the Castle. One of the best £5 you can spend in Durham. (Tickets at the World Heritage Office)

“INTERESTING TOUR”
Reviewed 27 September 2013

As the castle is part of the uni you must take a guided tour which only covers a small part of the castle. The visit therefore stands or falls by the quality of your guide. Our guide, a summer history student from Bristol, was fascinating and involved with the history and you could see him being a future Simon Scharma in a couple of decades.

Lived it all, as you walk up to the cathedral square you can buy a tour and they will give you a time, being your camera for this lovely old castle.

“interesting”
Reviewed 19 September 2013

you have to book a guided tour for the castle as it is part of the university of durham and in term time is used as student accomodation.however,it is well worth doing this for the fascinating history and our guide was knowledgable and informative.
