Owner description: Uncover 1000 years of history in this undefeated castle built in the Norman period as an imposing fortress, Durham Castle’s story is entwined with that of the Prince-Bishops of Durham, whose semi-regal status made them some of the most powerful and wealthy men in the country. Discover a castle that gradually turned into a lavish palace, which was affected by major historical events from the Reformation to the English Civil War. It was transformed in the Victorian period into a place of learning, as the home of University College, the founding college of Durham University. Today Durham Castle is a Grade I Listed Building, a Museum and remains a living building, evolving to modern day life while retaining its power to impress as part of the iconic Durham skyline. The unique nature of the building means that, entrance to the public is by guided tours only. However, this allows a personal experience that brings history to life. The following tour times are a general guide as it is sometimes necessary to cancel tours at short notice due to University or commercial activities. During term-time: every afternoon at 1.15pm, 2.15pm, 3.15pm and 4.15pm.During university vacations: daily 10.15Am, 11.15Am, 12.15am, 1.15pm, 2.15pm, 3.15pm and 4pm. Please check the tour times with Palace Green Library or the World Heritage Site Visitor Centre to avoid disappointment.

I've been to a fair few castles over the years and this was one of the better tours. Our guide Chris was lovely and very knowledgable (as you would expect from a history graduate!) he made the tour fun and had a lot of time for any questions which were asked along the way. For £5 entry fee for adults it's definitely worth doing if you have time.

Amazing. We were shown around by a very enthusiastic student - Caitlin Potts - who had both knowledge and an interest in the building herself. She brought it to life and it didn't feel like a tired talk/tour. Very well done

You cannot just walk in - you need to book a tour, but they are very frequent.
It's fascinating that its an ancient castle, contains some priceless bits of architecture, steeped in history and yet its an active part of Durham University and a Halls of residence so history of old meets history being made.

Well worth a visit

For my son's graduation we were able to stay in this college for 2 nights. Very comfortable and rather special to stay in a World Heritage Site. The architecture is like Hogwarts and during a meal I did expect the candles to start floating in the main hall.
100 yards away is the cathedral part of which stood in for Hogwarts in the first film. I wish we had had more time to tour the Castle

Durham castle is a Unesco World Heritage site build in the 11th century. This is the main building for the university college of Durham University, which makes it a lively place. You can visit here during visiting hours. Bishop Bek's Great Hall has magnificent stained glass windows. The hall is a dining room for students of the college.
