“The restaurant is well worth a visit”
Reviewed 7 June 2014

I, being a lover of fish and chips, was happy that my girlfriend suggested that we try dinner in the restaurant part of Bells. Having been before for a take-away and having thoroughly enjoyed it (see my previous review), it seemed a nice change to have a sit down meal in a fish and chip restaurant.

We both enjoyed two courses, the starter came with a salad and the main was on a huge plate. There was plenty of food and so really good value for money. I went off-menu a little and asked to add a battered sausage to my meal, which they happily catered for! - Even offering to give me it on a separate plate.

Even my girlfriend, who often finds fish and chips rather greasy, enjoyed her meal from Bells, particularly the starter of hot and spicy prawns. With chips cooked in the traditional fat drippings it's hard not to find them moreish!

The staff were very friendly and the restaurant had a cheery atmosphere to it, making it an extremely pleasant meal.

“Hitty Missy”

At Bells, when they are good, they are good. When they are not so good they are awful. The quality at Bells is never consistant which is very disappointing.

“Not to be missed”
Reviewed 4 June 2014

After reading the reviews had to give it a try, got the last table as it was very busy on a Tuesday lunch time, excellent fish and chips, had the haddock as recommended by a previous reviewer and was not disappointed, service very good. The restaurant is also licensed so you can have a wine or beer. They also do a takeaway service, plenty of seats in square if you want alfresco dining and happy to eat out of the paper (weather permitting).

“Traditional Fish & Chips”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

This is one of the best fish and chips I have had. The restaurant is only small but very clean and the staff are really lovely and helpful. The plates are really quirky in the shape of a fish. You also get a really nice cup of tea.

“Good old fashioned fish and chips!”
Reviewed 20 May 2014

Bell’s is situated right in the heart of Durham city centre so it’s not easy to miss it. Having read some good reviews on here we decided to give it a shot and was pleasantly surprised.

The place appears to have been refurbished quite recently and we were quickly shown to a table in the downstairs area. The menu covers the usual fish and chip fare and the price was reasonable considering the quality of food, location and decor.

Both our fish and chips were cooked perfectly and the portions were more than generous though only one slice of bread and butter for a side is a little annoying.

If you’re looking for an informal quick bite to eat then this is worth a visit.
