3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 June 2012

Four of us stayed here in May 2012. The owners were friendly and welcoming and the location was, as we had hoped, very well placed for the centre of the City. Our room was pretty clean and the beds were comfortable but, being at the front, we got the benefit of City background noise - not the owners' fault, but worth knowing that the University students finish their exams and celebrate hard this week, many of them at the Angel Inn, opposite.
The facilities were not up to the mark. There were no tea or coffee making facilities in the room as the owners seem to think we only need such things when their cafe is open. The shower was a joke. No problem with it being over the bath, but there was no thermostatic control, so if anyone in another part of the building dared to turn on a tap you had to move pretty fast.
Alas, another major failing was the absence of working WiFi. This was not supposed to be a vague optional extra. When you travel for an extended period and need to access bank accounts etc it is imperative that the WiFi, if promised, actually works.
Fortunately for the owners, Barbara and her breakfasts were a regular triumph and saved the place from only getting 2 stars.

Room Tip: The back room is probably quieter than those in the front

The decorations are very individual to the owner but everywhere was clean and Bright. I was really surprised not to have a tea and coffee tray (it has been mentioned in most of the reviews and I would have thought it was essential these days) but when I explained I liked a cuppa last thing at night and before breakfast Jane provided me with the necessary equipment and fresh milk. Breakfast in the pancake cafe was excellent and we enjoyed chatting to the other guests. Although the TV did not work Jane and Robert did all they could to fix it, but to no avail - we didn't really miss it. The B&B is excellently located for the city centre. We slept very well indeed.

We stayed at this place in March 2012 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Double room at the back of the building was large and was well appointed, lots of storage, great bed and sofa. View through the trees to the cathedral! Only thing missing from the room was tea/coffee making facilities. The owner clearly put a lot of effort into the choice of soft furnishings and decorations that gave the room lots of personality. This is reflected throughout the hotel. It feels more like a house than a hotel (in a good way) and the warm welcome extended by the friendly host made us feel instantly like this was a home away from home. Great pancake breakfast in the morning! Lovely place. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: second floor double at the rear!

I visited my son at the University and stayed here for two nights with a friend. We had a large twin room with very comfortable beds. It was quiet, clean and homely. it is true there was a lack of tea & coffee in the room but that was freely on offer from the adjoining cafe to take up to your room. The pancake house is delightful and slightly eccentric as is this whole establishment. Such a refreshing change from run of the mill with the bonus of delicious pancakes!

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 December 2009

I found the accomodation itself quite nice and the location is very good. It is true there are no tea/coffee making facilities (which is unusual for a place of this claimed standard). Breakfast next door was nice enough, but I found the service a teeny bit brusque.

Almost all of my interactions (e-mail/telephone/in person) with the proprietors were chaotic - people just seemed harassed off their feet. I had three separate fees quoted to me on various occasions. I noticed that e-mails were not returned and it was just hard work where it need not be. Those people I met in the flesh were perfectly pleasant, I should add, just a bit frenetic.
