“One of my favourite places”
Reviewed 5 May 2014

This place is beautiful for the views it affords, and also for the presence of one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world, and certainly the best surviving example of Norman architecture. The cathedral has St Cuthbert's Tomb/Shrine behind the High Altar, and the Venerable Bede's Tomb at the other end in the Galilee chapel. I agree with other reviewers - the best view of the Cathedral, Castle, and Palace Green is to be seen from Durham railway station.

“Glorious setting”
Reviewed 25 April 2014

With the cathedral on one side and the castle on the other, this is a very pleasant area.
There is also a cafe on one side and the university library on the other from where you can get lots of information brochures of the area and book tours of the castle.

“A 'special place'”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

Palace Green is that open, grassy area immediately outside of both Durham Cathedral and the Castle. Whichever way you turn the prospect is just glorious, with the soaring towers of the cathedral and ramparts of the Castle exactly opposite, not to mention the many other surrounding buildings around the Green.
It is a very special place to visit itself, but you must go into the Cathedral and (if possible) the Castle.
Bill Bryson is not the only person to love this part of Durham!

“Well worth a visit”
Reviewed 9 April 2014

With Durham Cathedral at one end and Durham Castle at the other this beautiful open space is worth a visit. Along the sides are equally impressibe buildings including the University Library and the Music School.

On a warm day it's a great place to stop and relax for a few minutes.

“Christmas Markets”
Reviewed 8 December 2013

We visited Durham to see the Christmas market on Palace Green, and were not disappointed. There was a good selection of stalls, selling a wide range of merchandise.
