“A dissapointing return”
Reviewed 1 April 2014

We have stayed at the Kingslodge hotel previously, coincidentally in the same room (3). We were aware that the bus depot was next door, this is no more, it is now a building site. This may have explained the dust webs on the ceiling of the room and the dust on the bedside lights.
Kingslodge is tucked away up a quiet lane (building site excepted), yet is only five minutes’ walk away from the heart of Durham city centre. On arrival our welcome was cordial, and we were directed to our room on the first floor. Room 3 is large enough for a bed, and a bureau with a single chair. Although there is nowhere to sit comfortably in the room there is a resident’s lounge downstairs. One of our major reservations was to find a note in the room that stated: “There is no staff on the premises between Midnight - 6.30 am.” We can understand the need to “cut your cloth” in these recessionary times, but consider this to be a step too far.
Breakfast is included in the room price, either continental or full English. On the first morning, the full English was one of the best I have ever been served. On the Saturday morning, it was nowhere as good; we can only assume that there was a change of chef between the two days.
We arrived for our two night stay on Thursday, leaving on the Saturday morning (check out time 11.00 am). The hotel was evidently looking forward to a busy weekend with the cleaning staff making their presence known from 9.00 in the morning. They were certainly keen to prepare all of the rooms, with one of them entering our room (without knocking first) before we had even checked out!
I have mentioned that this was our second visit to Kingslodge, I severely doubt that there will be a third.

I am sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your visit this time round. I was unaware that your room was not to your satisfaction but we could have moved you had you asked. Not having any night staff on the premises is more common than you think. We have had all our safety measures passed by the local fire officer and have an automatice alarm direct to an alarm company. We have off site staff covering the period between midnight and 6.30am and their mobile number is posted in every bedroom. The noise you could hear in the corridors at 9.00 am would have been guests going to and from breakfast as well as housekeeping.

Apart from the fact that the bed in our room was perhaps a bit past its "best-before" date, we couldn't find anything to fault here, (I'm ignoring the fact that my wife thought there should be a proper bar of soap as well as the perfectly adequate liquid soap provided).

At present there's a bit of a downside from the building site immediately beside the hotel, but the hotel can't be blamed for that. In any case, the only adverse effects are a slurry of cement powder making the hotel drive and approaches a bit unsightly and a rather confused traffic control system immediately outside the hotel. There was no problem with noise from the site during the hours when one would normally be in the building.

In fact the only noise "problem" was from the birds outside early in the morning. All very nice and rustic, and indeed we are both members of the RSPB, but at that time in the morning I'd gladly have swapped the room's TV set for a decent air-gun!

Talking of the immediate approach to the hotel, my GPS seemed to get a bit confused in this area, so look out for a handy sign on the wall of the C.I.U. building pointing down the correct road (a cul-de-sac).

First impressions always count, and the friendly and efficient welcome we received at reception continued throughout our 3-night stay.

We had originally intended only to use the hotel restaurant (Finbarr's) on our first night while we looked around the area for somewhere more potentially interesting, but having experienced it on the first night, we were more than happy to stick with it, as the standards were nothing less than superb, both in terms of the menu, the standard of cooking and the sheer professionalism of the service. Actually, the restaurant is a separate business entity from the hotel, so I suppose shouldn't really be reviewed in the same article, but if you didn't know this you'd never guess it; it's simply "the hotel restaurant" to all outward appearances. It's as well to book, incidentally, as unsurprisingly the restaurant receives a lot of custom from outside the hotel.

We probably won't be returning to Durham, but if we did, we simply wouldn't look any further....it would be the Kingslodge every time.

Room Tip: Try to avoid looking over the building site. We were on the front side looking over the garden (room...

Very good clean accommodation. Only 10 minutes walk from town centre .Cannot fault staff, extremely helpful. Excellent breakfast, didn't try restaurant. Would have been nice if the residents lounge was open after 9pm. However would still come back again.

We stayed here for 1 night en route to Edinburgh-thank goodness it was not for a longer stay.Very tired room-bed was more like a camp bed and woke up with backache.Has not seen a lick of paint for several years and very depressing décor. Also couldn't get parked when we arrived as packed with cars belonging to restaurant customers.Only redeeming feature was the breakfast,Will not be staying here again.Have had more comfortable nights in a Travelodge.

Had you voiced your complaints during your stay, we would have moved you to another room. Everyone has a preference for soft or firm beds.
The beds in question are modern metal framed beds with good mattresses and we have had no complaints about them in the past. The decor is cream - not partiulcarly drab - and was last painted around 6 months ago.
We do have ample parking, however, sometimes the car park is congested, but only for short periods. You did manage to park on the premises, albeit on the drive. You were told at the time that spaces in the car park would be available within a few hours.

Not far from the station and a 10 minute amble to centre; in a Culdesac so quiet, although looked like there was building works next to it though these weren't in operation at the weekend. Check in/out straightforward and there was a discount paying with cash at this time if year. The single room was clean and comfortable and fairly sizeable with a nice en suite. The bed was comfortable though memory foam which might not suit everyone. Good breakfast and nice to see they made an effort to source food locally.
My main problem was heat. It was a cold night but even having the window open all night it was still stifling in the room. I could find no obvious way of adjusting the heating down. The shower's cold setting was actually still fairly hot. Not a major problem in Winter but I would have preferred it to have gone cooler because the room was already so hot.

Good location, quite close to the centre of town. Slightly spoilt by the building work going on next to the hotel. We had a lovely walk in the woods adjacent to Kingslodge.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable if a bit tired looking.

The highlight for me was the breakfast, cooked to order and included vegetarian sausages, something many hotels refuse to stock even in the 21st century!
