“FIRST CLASS STAY”
Reviewed 19 November 2013

I have to travel the UK with my job and have the privilege to stay in some good hotels and some very poor hotels, however, I was recommended the Bowburn Hall by a colleague after staying in other hotels in the local area, which did not meet the high standards everybody would like to receive when staying away from home regularly.
On my arrival all the way through to me leaving I received a warm first class service - the GM is a true professional that leads a very good ship. The hotel is very clean the rooms are very comfortable and if anything was needed to make your stay more comfortable the staff assisted where possible.
There is a wide range of food to chose from, and the food is very good value for money, and you can tell the chef is passionate about what leaves the kitchen.
The hotel has a very warm family feel and everyone is made to feel welcome - all I can say if you are travelling to the local area then I would fully recommend this hotel.

We stayed here for just one night, but had been looking forward to a night away as it had been a while.

There are many nice things about this place. Nice building, lovely dining area, nice conservatory, tasty food and very handy for Durham and the A1.

The room was fine. Clean and tidy, the bathroom was ok. A wee bit of black mould here and there, but still very clean. The bed was however rock solid and very uncomfortable. But, we are away, and its a change of scene, so you forgive small things like this.

However......The thing that spoils the whole experience (and I am sorry Bowburn), is the staff.

The staff arn't evil or anything - it's just that the greeting was cold and unwelcoming. Just this...."Are you here to book in?"..."ok sign here", Here's your Key" ....and thats pretty much it. Erm.....where do we eat? When is breakfast? Do we want a wake up call? Nothing. No chit chat, no "did you have a nice journey", no information, nothing. I have never experienced anything like it before. I mean, the hotel was really quiet so its not like they were lacking in time to be pleasant. Once we had worked out where the restaurant was, there isn't anything to say how you order, or what is part of the DB&B package or anything (and I will come to this later). 6 staff were all having a 'banter' to each other behind the bar, and the 'waiter' brought my starter out and declared ' here are your magic mushrooms' (an in house joke apparently). Ha, ahem, ha. However, the food was very tasty, including the so called 'magic mushrooms', which luckily had no side effects, so no complaints there. The next morning after a very uncomfortable sleep on a slab of granite, we had a very pleasant breakfast. Not many smiles or pleasantries from the staff again, but tasty food. But checking out was annoying. After booking an £89 dinner b&b (exc drinks) deal from the hotel website, my bill came to over £200!!! So after pointing out this 'slight' miscalculation, it was reduced a bit - but still wrong. I left and decided I couldn't be bother with anymore poor management and lack of knowledge of hospitality, and luckily after a couple of emails of complaint I had the over charge refunded. So a wee bit of a meeting by management to point out various offers might have come in handy in avoiding such a cock up.

A place like this with the right staff and management could be amazing. But it isn't. It's a bit of a shame. Will I stay again - if they let me after this...maybe.

We got married here and I can't put into words how Amazing our day was at Bowburn hall, I can't thank the staff enough who made sure it went perfect, especially Nikki who went over and above what we expected, starting early and not finishing until she was sure everything went right. She's a star. Food was perfect for reception and night, everyone commented how nice it was. Even though I couldn't eat for nerves and excitement. The reception room was turned around twice during the day and it looked amazing, It wouldn't of looked so good if it wasn't for the great staff. Honeymoon suite was brilliant too, everyone really enjoyed themselves and couldn't believe how nice bowburn hall is. As they said 'I didn't even know this was here but I will defintely be back'. We will be back, hopefully every fortnight for Sunday lunch. Bowburn hall will forever be in our hearts and so will the people who helped make our wedding day.

We were in a hurry so decided to visit for Sunday lunch.
Service was very quick and helpful.
The meal was certainly not one to remember. The beef was tough and without flavour.
The Yorkshire puddings were stodgy. On the plus side the vegetables were ok.
No one asked if the meal was satisfactory or otherwise. Perhaps that was just as well, certainly from their point of view.
Not a meal I would recommend.

The Bowburn Hall Hotel was booked for the wedding of our son and his wife, mainly because of the size lent itself to only one function at any time and the use of the Hotel and it's rooms for the exclusive use of the wedding party and guests who were travelling from all over the world to be there. The location was ideal as it fell approx half-way between the 2 family homes and had the facility to have the wedding in the grounds (if the weather would permit). Guests travelling from a distance booked in for the friday and saturday and the bulk of the bridal party and family for the Saturday. This was changed at short notice when the friday night bookings were cancelled by the hotel, due to another late booking for a wedding on the friday. Then there was a charge for the use of the conservatory (where the evening buffet was laid out) and where the guests had to go whilst the staff made the change from ceremony to reception hall, then again for the evening reception. We were then informed that the Lounge/Bar was to be open to the public for meals, this lay between the Reception room and the Conservatory. There was to be a second bar open in the ballroom, which was closed within an hour of the evening reception (due to faulty pumps?). Then with a lounge full of Diners (some of whom were quite rude) we had the situation of them wandering into the wedding disco and buffet. The staff at the bar seemed far more interested in serving the general public than the wedding guests (until a strong complaint was made). If you book this venue, be sure to have all your T's crossed before you go ahead. This venue is now run by "Slaley Hall" and it seems that profit comes much higher than product to this company. If it were not for good families and friends this could have turned into a bit of a fiasco, but we rose above the incompetence.

We go to this hotel for food & it is a lovely hotel in a beautiful setting. The food is always good & the staff friendly but it is always the same menu, it doesn't change at all, especially the vegetarian option, always goats cheese tart, it would be so much better if there was more variety.

Stayed at this hotel on Friday 11th October to attend a 50th Wedding Anniversary party. Really nice room although a bit small. Mirrors sockets all in excellent positions. Hairdrier and tea and coffee making tray provided. Very comfortable room. Excellent Carvery meal was provided in the evening. One of the best we have had. Excellent continental breakfast. Staff were all very helpful and friendly. All in all a very nice hotel and we will return in the future.

Room Tip: Ask for a first floor room if you are disabled as there are no lifts.
