Some of the reviews on this page refer to the restaurant. This is clearly not the Dun Cow in Old Elvet Durham, which is a charming old English pub with no restaurant only excellent bar snacks to accompany the well kept ales and beers. There are other Dun Cows but not in the city of Durham. The one that is, deserves a visit. Excellent!

Small frontage of old pub just outside very centre of town. Front bar small with sliding door entrance. Larger bar to rear. Warm and cosy with well-kept ale. Very enjoyable.

The place looks great from outside with loads of flowers in hanging baskets even in early spring. The menu is massive with at least a dozen choices at each course and a specials board! Varied in style from around the world. Good service but ran out of draught beers as the night went on.

This is a tiny, old, two room traditional English pub. This is a pub for conversation and enjoying real ale. This is my cup of tea or more correct: my kind of pint!

This quaint little pub on Old Elvett in Durham is entered through a sliding door down a passage. The snug is small and warm and had a group of regulars at the bar talking over old times. We had been on the road for hours and thought it was time for a snack to tide us through to dinner.
Outside the pub are large blackboards proclaiming an array of tasty food to warm the cockles.
Arriving at 2 minutes after 2p.m. we placed our drink orders and asked if we could order food, we'd had our eye on the hor beef sandwiches. The polite request was not met with a polite response just a rather churlish 'no' ,As it wasn't busy it would have been nice if we had been offered a ham sandwich but there was no charm or leeway so we had a packet of crisps.

Now I know this pub has manygood reviews and my other half likes the beer but if this is famous northern, or north eastern hospitality,I fear for the fate of other tourists who may be taken in by the boards advertising food. Perhaps there should be a prominent notice at the top advising customers that if they don't want to go hungry and they would like friendly service this is perhaps not the place to go.
As we sipped our drinls and munched our crisps the staff sat down just behind the bar so obviously weren't too pressed to make a butty!
