We were visiting my daughter at uni and were desperate to get away from student bars and, via CAMRA, found this great local. It was a Saturday night and very busy until 10am when it did quieten down - low ceilings and a compact room all made for a great atmosphere. Friendly and efficient staff. Actually found the beer a little disappointing - only 3 real ales : Black Sheep,Castle Eden and Green Dragon (or something like that!) none of which were especially interesting or inspiring. They did have an impressive selection of malt whiskers though!

Great ale and friendly bar lady. It is more than 20 years since we last visited the Dun Cow and it is still a great place to visit - we called just for a couple of pints and to reminisce about the old place. Just the same - unspoiled by the modernisation brigade !!!

Some of the reviews on this page refer to the restaurant. This is clearly not the Dun Cow in Old Elvet Durham, which is a charming old English pub with no restaurant only excellent bar snacks to accompany the well kept ales and beers. There are other Dun Cows but not in the city of Durham. The one that is, deserves a visit. Excellent!

Small frontage of old pub just outside very centre of town. Front bar small with sliding door entrance. Larger bar to rear. Warm and cosy with well-kept ale. Very enjoyable.
