Had a meal at the Queen's Head on Friday night. We were four women (inc 3 over 60s) with a groupon voucher. £35 for a two course meal and a glass of wine for 4 people. We eat out regularly and we can be quite critical if we think the food or the service is not up to standard. Not a single complaint here. As soon as we walked in, the room was warm and the atmosphere was cosy and friendly. The young man who served us was friendly and polite even though we were asking for jugs of water, wanting to change drinks, etc (as older ladies are wont to do). I had fried mozzarella sticks, chutney and salad garnish for starters and duck breast with plum sauce and potatoes and vegetables for main. The others had different main courses and two of us had puddings instead of starters - the sticky toffee puddings with loads of pouring cream were gorgeous. The girl serving the drinks and helping serve the food was also very pleasant.
I have read the other reviews for the hotel and, while I am sure that every review is correct, they seem very far removed from our experience.
It's definitely a pub with no separate restaurant but, although the drinkers and eaters were all sat together, it all made for a very nice, comfortable atmosphere.
Would definitely go again, even without a voucher.
The photograph on the front of trip advisor page is years out-of-date. It doesn't look like this anymore.

Just stayed at this pub on 19th October, check in was poor, no one explained what the arrangements were for breakfast, times. We had to ask about a night key to get in after hours.
When we saw the room it was a disgrace, curtains that were not on a rod but a wire which did not actually close, wardrobes full of junk, had to remove it to put our clothes in.
Empty boxes under the beds, television which did not work and overall appearance pretty poor. I would not advise anyone to stay at this 1star hotel.
To top it all for breakfast it was supposed to be continental which we only found out in the morning, toast and cereal you would expect a full english, we even had to toast our own bread, well we would have if the toaster actually worked.
No one apart from the cleaner was there in the morning, I felt really sorry for her because she had to deal with disgruntled customers.
I actually complained and the manager has not even acknowledged the complaint.
This tells you what kind of hotel this is.
My advice to anyone is don't go there, and the photograph of the bedrooms on their website is a joke, must be another hotel as its certainly not one of theirs.
Never again

My husband and I came for a relaxing Saturday evening meal out and it didn't disappoint. My husband enjoys a pint of real ale and was delighted with the Black Sheep. I like a glass of red wine and there were a few choices. I chose a glass of Waters Edge Shiraz, very nice. We had a Nachos to start and enjoyed a large sharing plate of hot tortilla chips layered with salsa, jalapeño chillis & cheese topped with sour cream. For main course I had chicken breast stuffed with Brie & red onion marmalade finished with an Italian tomato & cream sauce with Parisienne potatoes, whilst my husband had Hunters Chicken. Both were absolutely delicious. We followed this with warm chocolate fudge cake & ice cream (which never disappoints). The restaurant was busy & there was a lovely atmosphere of friends coming to eat together. We had excellent service from the friendly staff and thoroughly recommend this for a relaxing meal out.

Me and my partner came to the queens head for a family meal although the dinner was nice. we saw the chef coming out of a outside storage room with frozen chicken, so was put off. the dessert was the worst Ive ever tasted and there was limited numbers of what was available. when i went to pay the bill for drinks which was 4.95 i paid with a 20 pound note and received only 5.05 change when told she claimed this was not the case and had rather a nasty attitude about it. i asked for her 2 check and was told there till was 25 pound down already and id receive a phone call the next morning as you can guess none came so i phoned to find out what happened and was told he could offer us free desserts which truth be told was laughable. working in a bar myself it is pretty obvious someone is taking money from the till i recommend cameras at tills!!! terrible meal, rude service (from only one barmaid i should mention), robbing and mold on walls in restaurant what more can i say? Stay Away!!!

Room Tip: dont visit

I was unfortunate enough to spend a night here in July 2013.
We had to pay before we had even been to see the room, I should have known by the tone and attention from the staff I was probably in for a less than welcome stay!!
The room was horrendous, holes in the wall, dust everywhere...the light was dull from the lamp not due to an energy saving lightbulb but the sheer amount of dust!
Dirty kettle, mismatched cups,no milk and filthy spoon to make a coffee/tea if I had dared to!
Carpet didn't fit the floor properly and the curtains didn't meet in the middle!! The tv was at the end of the bed and couldn't be watched due to the awful foot stead!! I had to laugh at the sheer joke of the whole room.
The shared bathroom was awful :(
The staff looked as depressed as the rooms, not good from a customers point of view.
Next morning the cleaner walked into our room before knocking!! We were told check out was 11am so why was the cleaner coming into my room at 10am!!
All in all a terrible place and no where near worth the £50.
I am not a snob and have stayed in many different hotels/b&b's and this truly was the worst.
Will try upload a picture for you all to see this wonderful room I had the pleasure to stay in!!

Spent one night in this B & B in June 2013, much to our horror ! We were asked to pay as soon as we arrived so did not have chance to check our room first. When we went upstairs we found a 1960s style, filthy family room (one double and two single beds) - there were no bed heads, just pre-war style mattresses with giant coiled springs covered only by one single sheet (clean sheets were the only saving grace!), so the entire night was spent trying to extract elbows, knees and shoulder blades from these big, uncomfortable metal hazards.
The window overlooked a main road, and this was jammed shut by the use of two black plastic bin liners. There was only one curtain which was hanging from a net curtain rod stretching only half way across the window, so we had to cunningly trap it behind the wardrobe to get some sleep and enable us to get dressed without being watched from the garage forecourt opposite.
The bedroom door had been subject to some serious kickiing on some previous date, and there was an old sink in the corner of the room and a kettle on the carpet floor. The bathroom and toilet were down the corridor to share with the 8 other rooms, and although the bath was clean there was no shower curtain or window curtain, so we had to stand in the bath by the window to use the shower and then mop the soaking floor afterwards!
Breakfast, we were informed optimistically, was to be continental, so after a sleepless night we tiptoed downstairs on the sticky carpet only to find a small, circular pub table with a box of crunchy nut cornflakes and half a loaf of 50:50 bread. There was an old margarine tub on the table with coffee and sugar sachets mixed in with tea bags and a flask of hot water to make drinks. Perched precariously on the edge of a plastic chair was a broken toaster that the cleaner told us not to put bread in one side of as it was broken..... When we couldn't locate any butter amongst this mess we were told they didn't have any, but there was a supermarket down the road if we wanted to go and get some!!
The socket that the toaster was plugged into had been totally painted over with green paint; and whilst waiting for the one side of the toaster that was supposedly working to trap our toast, we sat looking at a giant damp and mould patch growing down the wall above the continental breakfast table, and two red velour chairs which looked as if they had been left out in the rain for a couple of year and then had muddy wellingtons wiped clean on them.
Unfortunately we were left with no-one to complain to as the only person (apart from other guests) in the establishment was a cleaner who had only been there a few weeks. This poor lady came up to our room at 10.40am to ask us if we were ready to leave yet as she needed to get into the linen cupboard in our room to start changing sheets - we were supposed to have the room until 11am!
The cost for this room was £75.00 per night - so if you are visiting Durham try Travel Lodge or Premier Inn for a snip of the price.
