“Beautiful setting by River Wear”
Review of Finchale Priory

Finchale Priory

The abbey site is spectacular with the River Wear running past.
There is a bit of confusion between English Heritage and the proprietors of the adjoining property/caravan park. There is a charge for parking of £3, payable at the caravan site shop.

Lovely walk along the river side... Difficult to get parked, but that is the only down side. Take a picnic, take the kids... Great Family day out

What a stunning area of natural beauty. Excellent for family visits and dog walks. Picnic paradise. I can't wait to go again.

Delightful ruins of St. Godric's Priory, set amid stunning woods, and riverside. There is a nearby play area for children and picnic area. A small shop sells ice-creams etc. Only drawback is parking which is charged on a daily basis - expensive if you only want half and hour's walk.

As English Heritage members we visit a lot of historical sites. Fincale Priory is in a lovely setting and has a great set of priory remains both above and below ground. If the above reviewer has no interest in ruins and their history it intrigues me as to why he would visit here! Our family thought the ruins were great even on a cold rainy April day. We did think the £3 parking fee was a bit expensive though.
The only down side to the site itself was that the signage was very poor with no boards giving information about the site which are normally found at English Heritage sites.
