Review of Finchale Priory

This is not well sign posted but well worth a visit. It is a large and well preserved priory sitting on a bend of the river Wear. Lovely setting with a nearby coffee shop. Free entry to the priory but you will need to pay for parking. There is an adjacent caravan park for those wanting an extended visit.

This is a charming little priory in a lovely setting. It is free to go around the priory, but everyone, English Heritage members included, have to pay £3 car parking fee. That notwithstanding, this is still very much worth a visit and then perhaps a stroll along the banks of the adjacent river.

If you haven't been then it's absolutely worthwhile a visit. The walk along the river in either direction is pleasant and there's loads of wildlife. We saw a family of otters on our last visit! The Priory itself is fun for the kids to run around in and the café is great too! Remember that you have to pay for your parking.

This place is beautiful, lovely place for a walk/picnic. Shame about the confusion with where to park and where we were allowed our dog.
When i asked the old woman in the shop, i got an abrupt answer of "over the river" before she stormed off.
When i went to pay for the parking (£3!!) the same woman was even worse, slamming money on the counter instead of my outreached hand and grunting as she turned her back.
No need for this kind of service. Such a lovely place but i begrudge going back due to the attitude of the staff and the cost to walk through some woods.
