“Last minute find”
Reviewed 11 July 2014

My husband and I happened upon The Shadforth Plough when we were visiting the area last week and were very pleased with the food and service we received.

The pub was very clean inside and the bar area was quaint and traditional. The draft ale was Hobgoblin which my husband enjoyed. The restaurant was bright and quite busy with families eating when we arrived (surely a good sign on a Wednesday night) so we decided to stay for some food.

I'd highly recommend the fish sharing platter for a starter (it says it's for two but it's very generous so could easily 3 or 4 people for a small starter).

Wednesday night is curry night (2 x curries and 2 x drinks for £10!), so we gave it a go for our main courses. The curries on offer were all chicken but the staff were very accommodating when I asked for a vegetarian option and they made one up for me. We also had a side order of chips which were delicious - chunky and freshly cut, just as home-made chips should be.

I went for coffee instead of dessert (Illy espresso which was very good), my husband had apple crumble. It took about 20 minutes for the dessert to arrive which was longer than we were expecting, however when it turned up it was worth the wait. One of the best apple crumbles either of us had tasted!

We mentioned the delay to the landlady when we went to pay and she was incredibly apologetic, offering us a discount off our next meal. The staff service overall was excellent and value for money was exceptional.

Speaking to some of the locals at the bar afterwards, the pub has just recently changed hands and is going from strength to strength. We'll definitely be coming back next time we're in the area to try it again.

“Meal not up to expectation”
Reviewed 10 July 2014

We both had gammon which was not cook well. The egg on the top of both was burnt. Only good thing was the chips. We ordered cheese cake, it came in want to me was small jam jars without the tops. Biscuit on the bottom then the cheese cake mix then a scoop of ice cream. You could not get to the biscuit and also it was very crumbly. There was no taste to it at all. Very disappointed in the whole meal. Also the seat I was sat on the springs were coming through and you could feel everyone of them. Not be returning.

Firstly I would like to apologise for the quality of your meal, our Head Chef was on leave on the evening you visited us.
With regards to your desserts we have had a lot of feedback on the cheesecake and gave decided to go back to serving it in a more traditional manor.
The high back leather chairs are all in the process of being replaced, I only took over the business 6 weeks ago and have made servers, upgrades and these are next on my list.
Again sincere apologies, I really hope you will give us another try, as everyone deserves a second chance.

“New menu, new place”
Reviewed 5 July 2014

The advent of a new landlady and a new menu has really brought The Plough to life. There are still some old favourites like steak or fish and chips but new items such as the field mushroom risotto and the white chocolate cheese cake are superb. The quality and consistency of the food is excellent and the friendliness of the serving staff is great. A great place to take friends or for a quiet meal for two.

“Friendly folk & fab food!”
Reviewed 20 June 2014

Had dinner here on a Saturday night with friends. The pub was packed out with parties going on and the football World Cup but they managed to find space for four of us and served up some superb meals. My husband & I both had the gammon with egg which was delicious & served with beautiful chips - could not recommend it more highly and already looking forward to the next visit! The staff were so friendly & accommodating - such a pleasure to see!

“Perfect Village Pub, Great Food, Drink & Staff”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

What an excellent village pub and restaurant, the people of Shadforth are so fortunate.

We visited here with friends and were immediately impressed by the friendly reception, the attractive lounge bar, fresh flowers and an impressive range of beers and lagers to choose from.

The four of us all ordered different meals, the stuffed chicken with haggis, the farmhouse pie, the Lamb burger with amazing homemade onion rings and cajun chicken, spicy and served with tremendous chips and onion rings. It all arrived within 15 minutes, was served excellently and looked and tasted fantastic.

We then ordered deserts and what a terrific surprise the choice included chocolate brownie, cheese cake, pannacotta, fresh fruit and honeycomb ice cream - they were all terrific and presented brilliantly. The chocolate brownie with ice cream and an amazing homemade toffee and chocolate coating was just divine!!

We had a bottle of house white wine and a couple of lagers which were good.

The chef came out and spoke to us at the table and explained some of his ideas about the new menu being launched soon and his enthusiasm about cooking was obvious - it was a really nice personal touch.

When we asked for the bill, it was amazing food and drinks came to just over £58 for 4 people - it is incredibly good value and fantastic pub food. We look forward to visiting again soon and would highly recommend it.
