Well, what can I say. Overall the fittings and bathrooms will need a refurbishment soon, but to be honest, they weren't bad and I was told that they were getting new bathrooms anyway. I stayed over three nights in November. First night, a Wednesday, where I arrived fairly late (between 10pm & 11pm). After checking in, I wandered round to the bar, only to be told that it was closed - my fault as it closed at 11pm. After checking into my room, I popped downstairs (I was in the main building rather than the courtyard) to look for a paper, only to find staff pouring themsleves drinks, sitting down with a chinese takeaway - I was in shock! They'd turned away a customer just so the staff could have a party. The noise from a staff party (without any manager no doubt) continued through the night until approx 2:30am

Things went down hill from there - on the Friday & Saturday night that I stayed, it was inside the hotel -Friday was fine, but Saturday - the noise from downstairs throughout the night was horrendous. Same problem - a staff party.

Service from the breakfast team & management were very accommodating - but the evening 'student staff' leave a lot to be desired.

  • Liked — the friendly breakfast & management team during the day
  • Disliked — the evening staff parties!

This hotel/motel whatever does it matter? This place has the most attentive staff i have ever encountered even in a 5 star hotel!
We had some issue with hot water /heat but staff quickly sorted that out with a smile. Lot's of good advice from staff about the area. This property is on the bus line and it's a bit far out for walkers. Great if you have a car.The breakfast was fine and dinner was excellent. for the price we paidit was a good value. We visted a family member at university so it was quite convient for that.

Although motel style, I/we were greatly impressed. The food was better that expected, and although the rooms were not the biggest in the world, they were well kept and clean.
But above all the manager (large chap but extremely friendly) & team on duty when we stayed were the best we have experienced.
Will highly recommend.

We stayed in this hotel for one night in September. Whilst it is called a hotel it is actually a motel (i.e. doors of rooms open directly on to the courtyard/car park). Rooms are small and relatively basic but are (with the exception of the bathrooms) decorated to a okay standard for that type of accomodation with TV and coffee making facilities. Bathrooms are small and in need of refurbishment. The staff are very helpful and welcoming and the rooms were kept clean. The room rates are reasonable for the type of accomodation and include a comprehensive breakfast in the pub next to the rooms. The hotel is a short drive from Durham centre. As parking in the City centre is quite difficult, if you want to visit the City for a short stay, you may want to consider staying in a hotel where you can walk into the centre.

We booked Via laterooms.com and having looked at the trip advisor reviews hoped things would be OK but we were also prepared for a little dissapointment.

However, check-in was very friendly. the staff on duty were helpful and informative.

Still not sure about the "Motel-style" design of the rooms, with your room door opening out onto the car park.

That said the room was clean and fairly well presented. It is only fair to say though that the paintwork and some of the fixtures and fittings are showing signs of wear and are ready for replacing.

My only real critism was that the pillows were that hard that they have given me a bit of a neck problem!!

We had one evening meal in the restaurant which was well cooked and nicely presented. Again the staff were helpful, but not over fussy which we really like.

We did not find fault with the buffet breakfasts. Obviously a "waitress and menu" breakfast is better but this appears to be a method that most hotels are moving to and it suits us OK.

We took the number 6 bus into Durham. The stop is right outside the hotel and took about 10-15 minutes. We caught a taxi back which cost about £8.

We also drove to the Beamish open air museum (about 30 mins away). This was a great, if very full, day out.

Overall we found our stay at the hotel a pleasant one it is well situatted for exploring the area and would go back there.

  • Liked — The staff
  • Disliked — Motel style- and the pillows!!
