“Stay in a Norman Castle”
Reviewed 7 August 2013

2 nights B&B in Durham Castle, next door to the University Library, opposite the Cathedral and only a short walk down cobbled hill into city centre for about £70!. In terms of situation this really cannot be beaten but its only available during University holidays. My room was a single with shared bathroom-shared the sense that there were 3 new showers & toilets - so no problem and all immaculate. Modernised room was high up in the Tower, with thick walls (no next room noise), simple (it is student accommodation) spotlessly clean & provided with tea/coffee making facilities, snacks & toiletries. Plenty of storage space, power points and cleaned daily- I've stayed in much worse at 3 times the cost. All staff are friendly and incredibly helpful. Note of warning: my room at top of tower meant climbing several long steep flights of stairs... Several times a day- not for anyone with knee/hip problems! Suggest checking this when booking.
Breakfast in original Great Hall is self service and includes a choice of pretty much everything you could want, all freshly prepared in oldest working kitchen in UK! All fantastic value for money and a lovely stay.

Room Tip: Be aware of steep stairs to top floors.

You cannot get more central than this, and I only paid £30 for one night's B&B (£70 less than the Marriott nearby). The rooms are quirky and well layed out, with refreshments and towels. The breakfast in the Great Hall was varied and tasty. I was a student here, so I guess I'm biased, but the castle really is a brilliant place to stay if you're not bothered about the 4* hotel frills, although the copious staircases were far less effort as a student a few years ago! Highly recommended.

The castle is a lovely building, which is opposite the cathedral with a lovely green area and cafe's nearby. The breakfast in the grand hall is great - lovely food and choice in a buffet style and a wonderful room. The bedrooms themselves are clean and functional and have been modernised - and they are only available out of university term time. Reasonable price for staying in a castle! Be aware if you are a light sleeper the cathedral bells ring often, but this didn't disrupt our sleep. There was a private wedding going on the weekend we stayed, so the castle was not open to visitors, but as we were staying the friendly staff let us wander around the castle the morning after we checked in.

For university accommodation, the Durham Castle is fantastic--clean, comfortable rooms in a CASTLE! and breakfast in the great hall--an awesome experience. A standard room at the Castle (shared, but clean, bathrooms) is reasonably priced, and the location is ideal--right across the Green from Durham Cathedral. Durham itself is a beautiful little town, very tranquil--a great destination for a day or two, or a nice base camp for touring the area.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask about where in the Castle your room will be, as some (like mine) are up a LOT of s...

Durham Castle is a registered museum as well as a lively living and working community. It is the home of University College, the founding College of Durham University, and over 100 students are resident during term. Because of this, entrance to the public is by guided tour only and the tour route involves many steps and staircases, some of which are uneven, therefore the majority of the building is inaccessible to wheelchair users. My wife and I did the tour (just £5 each) and had a wonderful time. The tour lasts about an hour and our guide (a lovely American lady) was personable and very informative. Fully recommended.

Well the location is amazing, the view is superb, the setting is like something from a film. However the practical stuff was a little different. The bells go on all night every 15 mins, the spotlights that light up the castle are on all night and there was only one window that opened about six inches, so boy was it hot. If you turned over in bed, the bed made some tortured screeching noises that woke up everyone in the room. So sleep was not really an option. The breakfast was not really up to much - rather like a motorway services ten years ago, but it was of course in fabulous surroundings. The student staff were very helpful and overall we enjoyed the experience, because it was different. But if you really need your sleep, it may not be for you.

We had booked tickets for a concert in the Cathedral and the Lindisfarne Gospel exhibition the following day and found these rooms through Trip Adviser. Fantastic place and such good value. I recommend bringing the car up and parking briefly to drop of luggage before parking in the Prince Bishops car park. You don't have to pay the congestion charge if you let the receptionist know your registration number. Good self service breakfast with plenty of everything in the great hall. Yes there are stairs, but you don't get views without stairs!
