The room price is not what you would call cheap, the accommodation I received was very basic at the top of 3 flights of stairs and the bed was hard. There were very friendly staff and there were very surly members of the castle security men. The breakfast is taken in the great hall which is lovely but one morning the scrambled eggs had turned green under the hear lamp! It's an experience but I'm not sure it worth the charges they make.

Room Tip: Ask for one on ground floor or off the grand staircase

Stayed in a standard single room, which I expected would be basic with a shared bathroom. However the bed was so badly squeaky and creaky that I had to take the mattress off and sleep on the floor! There was no way of contacting reception from the room. In addition the doors are all very heavy fire-doors and do not have a softener on them and so when ever someone else exited or entered their room there was a number of bangs. When I checked out I told the receptionist about the problems and he took my card payment and said thank you for the feedback! No sense of an apology or recompense! Do not stay here unless you are a very heavy sleeper!!
I would say however, the breakfast was nice and the atmosphere of the castle was lovely and aside from the receptionist the staff were very friendly and welcoming.

We stayed here whilst on a weekend in the Northeast. Surpassed expectations - rooms fairly basic but what a location! Steps going up to room wasn't a bother for me; I made my partner carry the case! ;-) Breakfast in the Great Hall the following morning, buffet style. Eating breakfast and taking photos all at the same time. Good walking access to Durham. Whole experience was lovely.

I stayed in the Castle many years ago, and enjoyed the experience of being in the Tower. I understand that many of the rooms are now en suite, but that wasn't the case then! I was interested to see that the Great Hall is still used for breakfast for guests. I did not stay this time as I was staying in Bishop Auckland. However, I went on a guided tour led by a PhD student studying Archaeology. She was excellent, and I thought this a very enterprising way to supplement her grant. Very informative visit, then followed by a tour of the Cathedral.

A stay at Durham Castle is a unique experience - from your room you look out over the 11th century court yard, and as you step through the gate in the fog the Durham Cathedral looms before you. Breakfast is Harry Potter style, in a large hall where historic figures look down from their frames and stained glass windows. The quaint town centre is a small walk down, and a 40 minute walk around the loop of the River Wear makes you see these UNESCO cultural heritage sites from all angles.
The experience is also unique from a different perspective. No lifts, so if you are on a top floor be prepared for 60 steps up or down at least once a day (if you don't brush your teeth after breakfast, but go straight to town and stay there for the day). No telephone, no television in the room (remember, this is the 11th century!). The bathroom is a pre-fabricated plastic unit, which is adequate.
Service very friendly, but not very professional. Rooms are clean.
The bar in the vaulted caves serves excellent cocktails, but you may have to compete with dinner events in the hall.

Room Tip: Unless you enjoy the excercise, ask for a room on one of the lower floors.

Twin room was terrible , dirty stained carpet , no home comforts ( radio / tv / bedside lamp ) .Had tea n coffee making gear but that was about all , oh , nearly forgot , cheep and nasty plastic glasses provided too . En suite shower was good but no shower mat or anti slip surface making it very slippery and no grab handle in case of fall . Breakfast was very good but that was the only plus point . An ideal crash pad if you go out for a night out and only want to get your head down .
A typical student room !!!
