We have just spent the past four days and nights at the Farnley Hotel. Our room was very nice, large, bright and an excellent view over the garden with Durham Castle in the middle background. The only negative in the bedroom was the mattress, a big sponge that bent in the middle. I am looking forward to getting home tonight to our medium firm king bed. The staff has been very helpful and friendly. Breakfast left a little to be desired though tried the Continental breakfast this morning and that was a great improvement. The hotel was built as a private home some 150 years ago and must have been a mansion in its day. In between it has had a number of "lives" and resembles a B and B more than a hotel.
It is possible we will return should our travels bring us near Durham in the future. I must mention the unaffiliated restaurant downstairs, DH1. If you are in the area, give it a try. The food and service were outstanding.
