“Walls too thin”
Reviewed 12 April 2012

I stayed here Tuesday night in room 10, the bar staff and breakfast staff were great so was the checking in receptionist, however i was woken up at 2 am in the morning by noisy neighbours coming into room 8, because the walls are so thin i could hear every noise, each time someone jumped on the bed the headboard banged on the wall between our rooms, eventually at 3.30am they also went to bed, not the best way for me to prepare for a 4 hour drive the next day. I had breakfast, in the morning, i ordered scrambled egg and bacon, i ate the egg but the bacon was really tough as though it had been cooked for a while so i left it, on my way out i mentioned the noise at night to the receptionist, she said the occupants of room 8 were late shift workers and that was them just finishing work, its a pity they didn't suggest to this late comers to take into consideration other users of the hotel, other than that i just basically got a shrug of the shoulders. It wont happen again thoughbecause i wont choose this hotel again.

Room Tip: Ask if there are any late shift workers staying there

This hotel is wonderfully, typically British with oodles of charm and character with all that that phrase means beginning with the fact that the decor is 'a bit tired' and definitely needs a refresh. I had a brief one night stay here on business and had a comfortable night and pleasant experience. I particularly enjoyed my evening meal from the bar which was a Thai Chicken curry cooked to a high standard. I had a comfortable, very clean room with a nice view of the garden; the shower was old fashioned and a bit temperamental but worked OK.

Now the service - this is where many Americans would be driven potty because, while all the staff were very friendly, warm and welcoming and couldn't have been more helpful, they had a near comical attitude to efficiency and effectiveness. The receptionist kept three people waiting while going off to the bar to get a menu for a guest who would have happily waited until she checked us in. There were 2 bar staff and they would both leave the bar at the same time to go and do things leaving customers waiting to get served. I came down for breakfast and was the only guest but had to wait more than 10 minutes until the sole waitress came in to serve me. The cooked part of the breakfast was very poor, they had one meal to cook and everything was way overdone.

Provided you are prepared to wait a bit and aren't in too much of a hurry and can see past the odd worn patch of carpet and dodgy shower, you'll have a great time as the hotel is a lovely building, in nice grounds, in a lovely country setting and was very good value for money.

Having stayed in a few hotels within the area i was really pleased with my stay at Hallgarth Manor. Service was very good as well as the quality of the rooms. I would most definitely stay again.

Myself and my husband spent a lovely night here on 25th Feb. I was a little worried as some of the trip advisor reviews I'd read(after we'd booked) were rather negative. How wrong we were to be concerned. We have stayed in many hotels and the staff here are second to none, every one of them pleasant, helpful and cheerful and a charming member of staff lit the coal fire for us in a beautiful lounge after dinner which was perfect. Food (dinner and breakfast) was faultless and the room very cosy, quiet and comfortable with flat screen TV. Fab golf course which provides lovely views even if you don't play.Would stay again without hesitation and I would say that dinner, bed and breakfast with sparkling wine and chocolates in the room was very good value at £59 each for the night. Look forward to our next visit. Only negative point is that I would agree with previous reviewers that the carpet in reception areas could do with updating but in no way did this detract from all the positives mentioned.

Room Tip: Room 17 above the Stables pub was very comfortable, quaint with original features and quieter we wer...

We stayed here as part of a weekend away with my wife, and booked it through KGB deals. The hotel itself was very nice and the staff were very friendly. The location is great for anybody who wants to visit the area, 10 minutes form the centre of Durham and only 20 - 30 minutes away from the Metro Centre or Newcastle itself. They had a decent bar menu at reasonable prices and the food was good, the only downside was the cost of drinks in the bar!. On Saturday afternoon we had a couple of drinks in 'The Tavern' which is a pub located on the side of the hotel and due to one of the regulars been rather loud we decided to go into the hotel bar to get some peace and quiet. The hotel bar is just on the other side of the wall from The Tavern and therefore it was the same member of staff serving beer probably from the same barrels but the cost went up from around £4.50 for a couple of drinks to around £6.20 which i thought was a little bit of a steep rise in price, therefore if your going to have a drink in the hotel walk next door and you'll save a fortune.
