“Quirky”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 December 2013

I think quirky best describes this hotel! First challenge was trying to find it in the dark- country roads, minimal lighting, thank goodness we had the sat nav. The reception area is small but our booking in was swift.Watch out for the step as you enter. We were given directions to our room, no lifts ( my fault should have read about hotel facilities before booking) and no help was offered with our bags. Up we went, up a grand looking staircase and then another narrower staircase to what I can only imagine was once the servants quarters. The room was small, warm and unfortunately had a really stained carpet. The wardrobe doors were unable to close with clothes hanging inside sideways, no depth. Bathroom was ok but needs to be deep cleaned and all gaps around the bath need fixing. Towels provided are a bit thin and worn. As for the room lighting - subdued does not even begin to describe the effect!
Downstairs has a bistro- bar. Food was good, staff young and friendly.Bar prices as expensive as any other hotel.Breakfast was good, choice was varied, with very efficient service.
Overall the hotel was welcoming but I would not rush to book again.

Where to start with this place......
The room... Filthy, small, dated, unclean, bathroom had mould in shower, lights didn't work, poor facilities...the lists is endless. There was dust everywhere, carpet had clearly not been vacuumed in a very long time. Bed sheets were old, furniture in room was mank and old, no point fixing it..REPLACE IT
It got worse when we looked on top of the wardrobe to find old empty bottles of booze, newspapers and layers and layers of dust!!! We took these to reception to complain and we were informed the manager would be in contact to explain this.... STILL waiting for that call.
The building itself needs some tlc, outside it's very run down and again dated it literally looks like the owners have just given up and don't care.
The one good point was breakfast, good spread, nice cooked breakfast and couldn't fault it in any way, also the night receptionist was lovely, the morning we checked out the receptionist couldn't have cared less really to our issues.
Honestly I have never stayed in such a horrible unclean and poor customer service manor house before, massive improvements need to be made starting with the management who clearly do not care for their customers or the manor.

Room Tip: DO NOT stay in room 9

I think this is a case of 'Shabby Sheik' gone to the next level - downwards. The room was in a very bad state of repair, a small en-suite so small it was almost impossible to bend down without banging your head and backside and filthy to a degree that is unacceptable.

When entering the main entrance to the hotel my hands almost stuck to the door and I had to wash my hands right away. Everywhere in the establishment there was a severe lack of attention to detail manifesting itself in dust, dirt and simple but obvious things like table cloths placed correctly.

The 'Village Pub' annexe to the side of the main building on the other hand was very pleasant and a delightful atmosphere. We ate in there and the food was good [it came from the same kitchen as the main hotel]. Altogether not good enough for the price and I will not contemplate returning.

We had to be in Durham last Thursday so chose to stay here . We ate in the hotel restaurant . The food was very good . In addition we had breakfast the following morning which was also very good . The hotel is very handy for Durham city centre . Staff were extremely friendly and helpful . If in the area we would not hesitate to book again .

Stayed in room 18 on the 28th for one night. Hotel is nice but very dated overall. Having read other reviews I think we were unlucky with our room, especially re cleanliness. Dead flies in the window and dirt and black mold on the bottom of the frames. Grouting missing from parts of bath surround and end of tiling on edge of bath missing leaving gap which was filthy. Strange mix of furniture in room and 'wardrobe' looked like a DIY job. Glitter on stairs leading to room obviously from a previous party / celebration. The menu in the hotel folder in the room was dated March 12th and we had to go downstairs to ask for an updated one. Food was average but the breakfast was good. All rooms appear to be no smoking without a choice but had to smile at the message that guests would be charged £150 to their card to cover damage if they smoked in their room. Service was just about acceptable in restaurant at breakfast but staff do need to ensure that juice containers are replenished regularly. On leaving we were not asked if we enjoyed our visit just a thank you when we handed back the key. This review sounds picky but it's the little things that people notice and makes a return visit unlikely.

LI stayed here for 3 nights with my boyfriend, the buildings of the hotel are lovely, we booked what we thought was bed and breakfast as it didnt say otherwise and when we got there we were faced with extea bills for food, the food wasnt that great at all, also we went to go for a swim and to use the sauna, steam room etc, we went an hour before closing time to be rold by a staff member that he had turned the jaccuzzi and steam room and sauna off which wasnt on really, the room was lovely and i cant fault it, the hotel could he brilliant.if a few things were changed.

Visited here very last minute for Sunday lunch. The carvery was fabulous. Even at 2.15pm when the carvery should have been winding down, the food was fresh. Often when visiting other carveries the food looks like it has been stood for quite some time.
There was a choice of 3 meats, home made Yorkshire Puddings, a good selection of the most colourful veg (turnip, carrots, mushy peas, cauliflower, cabbage & leeks) plus roast & mashed potatoes.
I will definitely be returning for Sunday lunch soon!
