“dreadful”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 August 2014

We stayed for 1 night during graduation week in July, having spent the first night in a town centre hotel, with an enormous and clean room which was cheaper than this place. The "spacious double room" was not only tiny but dusty and smelt musty, as if the management had decided only to use this room as it was a busy week. There was hardly room to stand up in the decrepid, dated and tiny shower room with broken fittings. The room was directly above the hotel entrance and was noisy. The people on reception were unfriendly and disinterested. Following our stay we e-mailed the manager stating our dissatisfaction and when we got no response we wrote. We received no response. When my youngest child graduates from Durham University this is one hotel to which I will NOT be returning.

Room Tip: Don't know if any rooms are good, but do know that room above entrance is terrible

Ive stayed at this hotel a couple of times but felt compelled to write this review in the hope that things improve.
FIRSTLY staff and breakfast are great BUT what lets it down are the dated fixtures ie curtains, scratched and chipped units/cupboards,dirty carpets and please invest in black out blinds, to cover the dirty windows, the hotel has so much potential and character , but is slowly losing it , so please take some constructive criticism on board and act on these points Id hate to have to go elsewhere

Stayed 2 nights as a base for visiting the Durham area. Was bit bit more difficult to find than we imagined (no sat nav) as the instructions provided were not the best. Initial greeting was pleasant without being what i would call a warm welcome. The hotel has a bit of character with a lovely main staircase and pleasant enough lounge and dining room. Bedroom was quite spacious with lovely view out to the rear garden area - the grounds are quite pelasant without being elaborate but in a peaceful area. We did not eat in the hotel other than for breakfast, which could not be faulted, usual mix of self service for cerals, breads, croissants etc and cooked breakfast made to order. Meals could be purchased but as noted we did not try out the restaurant. There is a village inn attached to the hotel which was quite pleasant and the draught beer I tried went down a treat.
If there is a donside it must be the plumbing/ water supply which was a bit on the noisy side, the walls were a bit on the thin side and the character I mentioned earlier extended to squeaky floorboards.!!!

Stayed here last night for my friends wedding. Don't get me wrong, venue is fab for weddings and couldn't fault the day itself but accommodation for guests is an entirely different matter.

We stayed in room 14 which was a tall ask with 2 children in tow (thankfully the youngest went home) but after about 4 flights of steep steps we reached the room. As soon as I stepped inside I could tell it didn't live up to the £135 per night price tag. Very dated decor in need of more than a few licks of paint. Flowery curtains and chipped paint around the window. Beds were lumpy and pillows almost non existent. Pull out z bed which I wouldn't of let my daughter sleep on so thankfully she went home. No remote for tv so wouldn't switch on. Tempramental light which flickered on and off constantly and was only fixed with a swift bang to the table it was sitting on. Empty drawers (no hairdryer or hotel information) no hangers in wardrobes. Grimy dressing table with spider crawling into kettle. Stains on bedsheets. Headboard banged furiously against wall everytime you moved in bed causing you and others in your room to wake up everytime you moved. Bathroom was absolutely dire. Stank of damp and very dated fixtures and fittings with nana style floral tiles. Flush on toilet didn't work and handle is hanging on by a thread. Shower didn't work so had to run a bath. Whilst the bath was filling noticed previous guests hairs. Disgusting. Couldn't wait to get out of there. Walls were very thin and could hear guest next door snoring and their alarm going off at 8am. Windows could do with being double glazed aswell as we went to the room before wedding party finished but couldn't actually sleep until wedding party finished as music was booming and guests in garden were really rowdy. Breakfast this morning was nice but would of preferred table service as opposed to self serve for £135 per night.

Overall fab wedding day but think hallgarth manor should seriously think about sticking to this only rather than providing accommodation too as it really took the shine off for us. Have stayed in nicer b&bs in Blackpool. None of these comments are picky but honest criticisms that should be taken seriously for the business to improve.

Will definitely not be staying here again even if I have another wedding to attend. Would rather pay the £20 taxi fare home.

Me and my wife stayed here for one night. The staff were very pleasant and the food was excellent. The rooms are good considering it is so old. We would definitely stay here again as it was also good value for money.

My son and I stayed for one night to allow him a visit to Durham University which is 18 miles further on.

The Hotel is just off the A167 and easy to find, but once through the gate you are faced with tiny signs and a drive around the car park to find reception. Then you realise the only tarmacked road is the way, however, if you drive there and then think there is a car park further on - wrong - its the breakfast terrace, which either means a turn around on the grass or a trick reverve.

Better signs please.

The reception is small. For an extra £10 I opted for an executive twin (bigger) and water in the room, however no air conditioning (we are in England) but a very hot night and the window barely providing much needed cooling.

Room 48 was ok. usual odd chair and odd lighting and the TV about the right size. One pack of biscuits and no hot chocolate - a good 3 star room. Clean towels ok, and shower and bath ok.

The Hotel is a bridal venue, but being a Friday night we were lucky. There is a Pub, yes Pub opposite reception "The Stables" and just behind the spa and fitness centre. Golf course as well.

We had a well prepared and presented meal - and two pints for £27 which is fare. My fish and chips were spot on. Service was good.

The swimming pool is not bad, not great. Hottest Jacqui and a Stream room and Sauna - you can miss the pool side shower - its between them. My son reported the fitness room equipment room was good, but why wasn't there a water stand inside the room (if was outside of the door), obviously to service the pool and fitness room.

The do it but in the most cost efficient way isn't a bad thing but it shows in the leisure centre! The swimming trunk bags were Tesco freezer bags -- but I have to say an excellent bag!

Breakfast was served at 8am -- and again not bad. The small tables in the corner, means only one or two people can get to anything. The full English was good, one of every thing.

Service was good. Hot tea and good toast.

Ring them to book and the Squirrel offer nets you a bottle of wine (red Merlot - drinkable) - but you cannot use this with the other two offers, which caused a confusion on booking and they never saw my side of the - your web site is misleading debate.

Reception is fast and efficient - My Stables bill was missing off my bill - and when the error was pointed out the receptionist was more they pleased at my honesty. Mistakes happen so always check your bill.

A good solid English Country Hotel.

PS there is a pub on the corner, a Mac D's nearby, a pub south on the A167 and a Tesco south on the A167 5 miles from the hotel.

Room Tip: Room 48 - a long walk but quiet. No lift !

Stayed only one night whilst attending a wedding. The wedding itself was wonderful thanks to the Hallgarth Manor staff who worked exceptionally hard throughout the day and evening to ensure everything ran smoothly. The wedding meal, evening buffet and breakfast was excellent and served without delay. However, the bedrooms are in need of refurbishment, basic toiletries (didn't bother using them) and the chairs in the ceremony room were stained and worn - very off putting - and such a shame.
