“Over priced”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 November 2013

The recently refurbished room was clean, as you would expect, and comfortable. However, there was only one bathrobe and only one packet of biscuits on the tea tray, not what you would expect in a double room. I was asked to pay in cash as the credit card machine wasn't working. Strange.
The breakfast was nothing special though the lady serving it was very pleasant. At £100 a night I felt the room was over priced, £75-£80 would have been more appropriate.

Room Tip: There is no view of the castle in the rooms at the front. Not sure if there are rooms at the back w...

Why when paying a reduced price for staying as a single in a double room would you expect to find 2 bathrobes and 2 packets of biscuits.
You were welcome to a dozen packets if you had but asked.

What is " strange " about paying cash when a credit card machine goes down - we are all subject to the vagaries of the telephone system or do you know something that we don't ?

We now regret having given you a reduced rate after having bitten the hand that fed you.

You can please some of the people some of the time - but you can't please all of the people all of the time.

I agree with everything the other 5 star reviewers have recently posted. This is a lovely, friendly and spotlessly clean guest house. The views are amazing, beds are really comfortable, wi fi, great location, thoughtful extras like dressing gowns and delicious breakfasts cooked by Margaret. My friend and I stayed here back in August for 4 nights and as we were starting to plan our 2014 trip back because we'd had such a good time I realised I hadn't posted my review. Sorry Anne and Mike! The little garden is a delight and we were lucky enough to have good weather and enjoyed sitting out. Nothing is too much trouble for the owners. They recommended an excellent restaurant - Finbarr's. It was so good we went there twice. Other good places in the area are The Capital Indian Restaurant - top notch curry and lovely service, The Crushed Chilli Gallery in South Street (2 minutes walk) - paintings, ceramics, glass, jewellery and accessories (could not resist buying a few things there from the very nice owner) and terrific fish and chips at Bells Fish Shop. The cathedral is the most beautiful I have ever visited. We were there at the time of the Lindisfarne Gospels exhibition which was sublime. We too decided not to drive and found the local train bus and taxi services were very efficient. The trip to Holy Island was truly memorable (eat at the Post Office - seriously! - it's great). This is a lovely part of the world where you always get a warm welcome. If you visit Durham - stay at The Castle View Guest House. You can't beat it for price, comfort and location.

Room Tip: We had rooms at the front on the first floor - they were very quiet and spacious. The corner room h...

Castle View Guest House is a 10 minute walk with luggage from the Durham Train Station. This is a tough walk going downhill for half of it and up hill for the other half, with stairs. If you are not up to a strenuous walk, suggest you take a taxi. Our room on the 2nd floor was 'very large', clean, comfortable and quiet, with free Wi-Fi. The bathroom was large, very modern, with a 2 person shower. There is no room safe. Breakfast consisted of eggs, toast, sausage, coffee/tea, juice, yogurt and fruit. Dry cereal was also available. There is a backyard terrace that you can use to eat breakfast or just take in the Castle/Cathedral view. Regrettably it was too cool during the time we were there to use this great feature.

Castle View is only a few minutes walk to the Framwell Gate Bridge and City Centre. While in Durham you can enjoy a North American doughnut shop, Krispy Kreme is located on Silver St. Durham is a nice place to walk around. Strolling along the river was great!

We stayed 2 nights here and from Durham we took a day trip to Hadrain's Wall. Train and bus service worked very well.

We toured the UK and all of Ireland over 5 weeks and this was the best/nicest place we stayed. We would definitely stay here again! Thank you Anne and Mike.

We went back to Durham for our anniversary/birthdays weekend and were really pleased with the gorgeous B&B - it was a real treat! Very luxurious from the linens to the en suite. We had the front room but weren't disturbed by noise at all. Actually, we popped into the pub opposite, lured by the live music, and had a great time reliving our rock phase days! Right near the town centre, it's a quick walk to anywhere and easy to get back again. Highly recommended.

Kirsty we love it when our guests get immersed in the atmosphere of the area - it's a real university experience isn't it. With all the atmosphere of a medieval city.
We always say - if your main criteria is peace and quiet why come to a vibrant centre like this.
All the best.

We spent one night here on the way North.
The room was of high standard and the ensuite bathroom was very spacious.
The bed was very comfortable. Our room was on the front and our sleep was interrupted by two lots of rowdy revellers! This was probably a rare occurrence as we thought the noise came from students just arrived tor the new semester!
The breakfast was very good and well presented.

Room Tip: Our room was on the first floor on the front, very spacious and comfortable.

Yes weekends are lively here but our sound proof glazed windows shut out nearly all noise.
When locked ! ! ! Silence usually reins after 11pm weekdays and 2 ish on Fridays/Saturday.
But hey you are on weekend holiday and you are young.
Best regards
Mike

We visited Durham in September and spent three nights at the Castle View. What a great B&B! The rooms and bathrooms were exceptional in spaciousness and decor. Being within a hundred yards or so of Framwellgate bridge it is in an ideal location for walking the city. Parking spaces are available on the street out front with passes available from Anne the owner. Breakfasts were very good. I would highly recommend a visit next door to St. Margrets Church which has beautiful stained glass windows and furnishings. I would not hesitate to visit the Castle View again.

Hi Okiepeach !
Thank you so much for you lovely comments.
You really seemed to enjoy your three night stay soaking up the medieval environs of our beautiful city.
We have many really nice guests and I am happy to say that you are amongst them.
Maybe you could come again - I would like to think so.
Best wishes

My friend and I are seniors and were delighted that they had a room of the ground floor. Furthermore it was large and nicely decorated, There is a lovely garden with places to sit and enjoy it. The location is great close to shopping, restaurants, the river, and the bridge that takes you across and up the hill to the cathedral and castle area. I think most people could do the walk, but there is a bus that will take you up and the stop is about a block from the Guest House. There is a pleasant breakfast room and the breakfast was very good. The Guest House is easy to find, if you look up and realize that Crossgate street has 2 levels and the Guest House is on the upper level. There is parking on the street, but there is also parking lots near by. We got lost, not thinking that the upper part of the street was Crossgate but we called the Guest House and they guided us in. Durham is an interesting city and worth more than the one day we had. I would highly recommend this Guest House.

17 century English Heritage Listed Building with origins going back to the 14th century - restored and decorated to the highest standards.6 en-suite rooms - 2 with views of castle and cathedral the others looking over the historic street of Crossgate - one of the medieval routes where the ancient road from England to Scotland forded the River Wear and on which the city was originally founded - this unprepossessing street predates the castle and cathedral. The house is the closest residential property of all to the town centre and is only a few minutes walk from the castle and cathedral , the historic centre , shopping streets and restaurants. This can mean that the street is sometimes lively and noisy at night usually at weekends due to the fact that we are a prestigious university city with many boisterous young people out and about. We do however have double glazing and the highest quality beds to help you have a goodnight sleep before a full English breakfast cooked fresh to order with cereals , juices , and freshly cut fruit salad. ... more   less
