“Five Star Accommodation Masquerading as B&B”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 May 2014

This B&B is easily on par with many five star hotels, but obviously for a much more reasonable price. Room # 6 was huge - more than enough for one, and very comfortable for two. It was spotless, had a large flatscreen TV, a modern bathroom that was similarly spotless with heated towel racks, and of course free WiFi.

The owners were very friendly and the full english breakfast each morning of my two night stay was wonderful. It's also within walking distance of the central square and Cathedral area, as well as the train station (although the walks are a bit strenuous). This B&B could easily be recommended as a getaway destination in itself just to relax and unwind, but anyone traveling to Durham should have Castle View Guest House at the top of their list.

Castle View is an excellent choice for a B&B in Durham. We had Room #4--clean, spacious, comfortable, and a wonderful bathroom/shower. Tea/hairdryer/robe all provided. (Those who need pitch-black rooms to sleep in, bring an eye patch.) Everyone was very friendly, and both continental and fresh-cooked English breakfast are available. The location is excellent for walking into Durham and to nearby restaurants.

Room Tip: Room 4 was wonderful. Tons of room, huge bathroom. Despite curtains, it's bright in the room f...

Have just returned fron a one night stay at the Castle View Guest House. Our room, No 2, was a beautiful room. Spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The tea, coffee etc is plentiful and toiletries are provided in the very clean and smart bathroom. The guest house is a few minutes walk from the castle and cathedral. We loved staying there and would definitely book again.

We recently spent a total of 10 nights at Castle View out of a 22 day stay in Europe while we visited our son who is in the masters program at Durham University, using Castle View as our base. We could not have been more pleased with our stay. Our hosts were gracious upon our late arrival as well as accomodating in storing our excess luggage during our excursions away from Durham. The room was fantastic as were the breakfasts each morning. Free wifi in the room and a desktop computer at our disposal were excellent inclusions to the overall quality of the stay. Our gracious breakfast hostess even booked a taxi for us for our extremely early trip back to the airport.

We have, and will continue, recommending the Castle View to other parents from the US visiting their children and would recommend it to anyone wanting a superb place to stay while visiting Durham. We hope to have the opportunity to return one day.

A return to Castleview is an integral part of the anticipation of coming home to my old university city - which remains as vibrant as ever.

My other half and I stayed in room 4 which is very well appointed with a modern bathroom, double shower and an exceptionally comfy bed. And touches that let you know the the hosts haven't skimped - such as deep pile carpet that you can sink your feet into. Lovely. My partner is a relatively light-sleeper but had no problems with this room.

The double shower has the rain head and the water runs as hot as you like - and I certainly like it that way!

It was a similar story with breakfast too, with a generous full English cooked - and delivered - just to our liking.

But perhaps the best part is that Anne and Mike don't suffer the pretentiousness that often bedevils proprietors of well-appointed accommodations: friendly and down-to-earth, they leave you wanting to make your next visit just that little bit sooner!

This was recommended by family. A top quality experience in all respects, reflected in the price, which is fair. This establishment is run by professionals who take pride in what they do. There are cheaper places elsewhere for those who are happy with lower quality. Everything is spotlessly clean and new, the location is ideal for the cathedral and city centre, for transport, and for parking.

Couldn't fault the service, we had to have breakfast after 9 due to an early appointment and when I mentioned this to the lady she said they'd cook it beforehand and serve it later, which was fine and it was excellent.

Our room was beautifully equipped and supremely comfortable, the only thing I didn't much like was the bright modern lighting (some would like it) but it can be turned off and there are small sidelights.

Room Tip: Some reviews indicate that the front rooms can be noisy. Ours had soundproof windows and we heard n...

Thank you Mike for a cracking review.
I immediately showed it to to our cook and she was " over the moon "with your comments.
We are not cheap but we always try to give value for money.
We look around the guest house and try to make it the kind of place we would want to stay in ourselves and get a lot of satisfaction when we get an appreciative review.

Built in the time of King George II, this guest house has all the charm and prominence of the Georgian period.
Room 4 is very large and overlooks two streets, one cobbled and one leading down to a main artery that crosses the river.
A very comfortable bed in a large room and a modern bathroom which has benefitted from a designers overview creating a contempory outlook in a wonderfully old building.
Breakfast is excellent, the host very much involved in delivering a superb service, that we wished the time hadnt passed by so quickly.
Plenty of restaurants to chose from locally and all within a maximum of ten to twelve minute walk from our room, The Cafe Rouge being one we definitely rated and Esquires opposite has A Hot Chocolate 'with the works' thats second to none of the many eateries we tried.
Highly recommended, its a good base to leave from and return too.

Dear Simon
Thanks for your review. It was a pleasure to have you and your wife as guests. Even though you banged your head on a low ( for you ) light pendant a couple of times, you never lost your cool.
Also thanks for researching the age of the house.
We look forward to seeing you again.

17 century English Heritage Listed Building with origins going back to the 14th century - restored and decorated to the highest standards.6 en-suite rooms - 2 with views of castle and cathedral the others looking over the historic street of Crossgate - one of the medieval routes where the ancient road from England to Scotland forded the River Wear and on which the city was originally founded - this unprepossessing street predates the castle and cathedral. The house is the closest residential property of all to the town centre and is only a few minutes walk from the castle and cathedral , the historic centre , shopping streets and restaurants. This can mean that the street is sometimes lively and noisy at night usually at weekends due to the fact that we are a prestigious university city with many boisterous young people out and about.
