This is an interesting castle still lived in by the owners so only a few room are viewable and the gardens are small Allow less than an hour

Interesting history and a nice looking castle, it killed about 30 minutes, but not astounding. wouldn't go again.

Hello, thank you for your review; I'm pleased to see that you found Compton Castle interesting and nice looking. I'm sorry to see that you aren't planning to visit again - I would certainly recommend another visit if you are in the area, the gardens are glorious throughout the year, and there's always something new to discover.

OK so the thing more or less fell down in the 19th century and was rebuild and restored in the 20th - but it has been done very well indeed. Plan for a short visit - an hour or so; maybe a bit more in summer when the gardens will be at their best. The Canadian connection was a pleasant surprise.

Don't plan for an all day trip as the actual area that can be viewed is extremely small. Apart from that there is very little information on anything within the castle. There are occasional leaflets dotted about but even these I found were in the wrong room. Definitely not a place to take children.

Hi there,

I'm sorry to see that Compton Castle wasn't what you were expecting - we do always try to make it clear in all materials about Compton that it is a small property which is still a family home. I'm also sorry that you felt there wasn't much information - perhaps you missed the booklet of information which you collect from the Great Hall and take around the castle with you, which provides a guide and information on the history and collections in every room. Our volunteers are also dotted around the castle with the intention on answering any questions and providing more information for our visitors. For children we have a couple of trails and activities which prove very popular.

I hope that you can visit again and experience the aspects you perhaps missed on your first visit.

Have been meaning to go to Compton Casle for a long time and have just managed it! (If you are going you need to check it is open because it isn't open all week). We were not disappointed. The whole place has a feeling of history but in a nice and comfortable way! It feels a friendly old house and is very interesting and, sometimes, quirky. The staff are friendly and informative. It is a bit of a shame there is not more of it to see (not really surprising when the family still reside there!) But what there is is well worth seeing. Would love to be someone with that history and sense of belonging. Only problem we had was working out which way to go round but perhaps our internal satnav `s weren't able to function in those thick walls! The gardens are compact but lovely and well cared for. The thatched barn at the front of the building looks amazing - would have loved to see inside and learn more about it.
We finished our trip with a cup of tea and a toastie teacake across the road at the little cafe- recommended for a welcome rest.
All in all a lovely place to visit and savour the past.

Hi there,

Thank you for the fantastic review - it looks like you thoroughly enjoyed your visit, it's super that you found Compton quirky and interesting. Have you visited nearby Bradley Manor? It's a medieval manor house that sounds like it would be right up your street.
