Bay Esplanade Hotel

I have just returned from a week at the Esplanade Hotel at Paignton. Desperate for a makeover. We had not been told of renovation work there until we pulled onto the carpark. It is not the best hotel I have ever been in. Our room was above the kitchens/back yard. . We had noisy birds screaming day and night outside the window. Even local residents were complaining about it. Noise from the kitchens with doors slamming, pots and pans crashing about late at night and early morning. The floorboards creaked so badly we only had about 3 hours sleep per night. The painter underneath our window had his radio going full blast and the machinery outside was also noisy. The sun room and garden were closed and when we asked if there was anywhere to sit outside, the receptionist could only suggest walking across the road and sitting on the beach! Hardly satisfactory at all with these amenities missing.
The bathroom was a corridor. The sink was a tiny cloakroom sink and bending down to wash my hands (I am 5ft 6in) was impossible without pushing the door open with my rear end. I am quite a thin person so heaven help anyone who was taller or bigger than I. The shower fluctuated to either very hot or cold during use. Not good for one who is unsteady on their feet and of course there was no bath. Dining room understaffed but very helpful. Lots of wasted food - 3 dishes of veg for 2 of us. Same veg every night for the whole week. 2 hours to serve dinner - one waiter to 34 tables. Bed linen stained. Best part was BABBACOME THEATRE variety show was fantastic. Entertainment in hotel not bad either. But wouldnt go again.

Stayed at The Esplanade Hotel with husband for 7 nights. Travelled with Shearings and journies there and back absolutely great. Though drivers work far too hard.

Staff at hotel are fantastic, always try to be helpful and assist you with any problems. Such as our first major one being the bed being rock hard, felt like we were sleeping on a board not a mattress. On requesting an extra quilt be put on the mattress, no problem at all. Fortunately after that we slept well.

Our room was tiny, overlooking a dirty yard where workmen arrived at 7am each morning to start banging timbers on to the roof. Very nice.

Menu each day gave you plenty of choice of main meals, but vegetables were mush. More like baby food then adult food. On speaking to the chef, Sean, who was always helpful. I was informed it was due to the amount of elderly people they cater for. Absolute rubbish. Not all elderly people have false teeth. What do they think they eat at home? Heinz jars? Why would you want 4 vegetables when you order a curry or a salad? Why isn't the chef given enough staff to allow him to purchase fresh vegetables that are prepared on site, rather then having to buy ready prepared veg that he has no idea of how long it has been held for?

This hotel could be wonderful if the management and owners spent some time and money paying the staff a decent wage to enable them to not have to run around like frightened rabbits and bring the hotel up to the standard holiday makers who have worked hard all year for their holidays deserve.

Why don't they employ mystery shoppers to point out all their errors which cause so many bad reviews.

The location is very good , just 2 minutes to the sea. We found the hotel very comfortable with a nice lounge/bar and a good entertainment room. When we visited the sun lounge was being redecorated and should be ready soon. Service in the restaurant was great with very friendly staff. The rooms are fairly small and some level of gymnastic skill is needed in the shower but overall the hotel offers very good value for money.

I stayed for a week with my elderly Mom and was so disappointed with what was advertised as a 4 star hotel and charged 4 star prices! I would have said it was 1 or 2 stars at the most. The carpets in the room were filthy, we weren't given the specially adapted shower I had requested for my Mom, the bath was too small for either of us to use properly and there were damp patches on the walls. The food was awful - so much so we chose to eat elsewhere a lot of the time even though we had pre-paid for half-board. The hotel seemed short-staffed so waiters had to act as porters and there was no one on hand to deal with any problem/emergency you had as the solitary person on reception had no back-up at any point. The Deputy Manager just didn't seem interested and dismissed any complaints that came her way like they were not important. For such a fantastically located hotel, it really is going to lose out in custom in a big way if it doesn't sort itself out - pretty much all the guests we spoke to had problems with the place

Having read some of the negative reviews we were a bit concerned, but if you consider the hotel as a touring base it was well placed. Yes there was the odd hiccup in the restaurant, but all in all the standards were reasonable both in the room and dining room .we would be happy to go there again.

We arrived at the hotel to find our bedroom window would not closed, it was really cold weather. We were told that the window would be fixed the next day, the reception staff were lovely and tried to help as much as they could. The meal on the first day was lovely and service was good. After that everything went downhill, we got back from our days excursion to find that in our room and approx 10 other rooms near ours the water was not running at all. We waited as they thought it would be fixed that day, but they couldnt fix it so they moved us to a room which overlooked the back yard of the hotel which was dirty and all we could see were lots of bills, and the staff could walk past our window and see in. I was not happy at all. The waitress at the dinner service ignored us for about 20 minutes after we sat down for both breakfast and evening meals, until we complained to her and then she served us, but the following meal she was just the same, service was very slow and the meals were not that good when they did arrive as they were partly cold. The excursions were good though, which partly made up for it, I would not visit again though

Hotel decor is a bit tired but offers fantastic value for money. Good food, great drinks on the all inclusive deal and friendly staff. Service in the dining room is excellent- best I have experienced. We paid extra for sea-view room and this was a good move. We got a reasonably sized clean room with the luxury of a bath. Some of the travellers in our party had rooms which only had showers and no bath. If you want a bath make sure you inform the hotel. Entertainment programme was good. We didn't bother going on the first two evenings and were surprised at how good it was when we went on the third night.
