We returned yet again to our favourite Paignton tea/coffee venue, the Palace Hotel overlooking the Green on Paignton's sea front. Easter weekend just behind us, the holiday season ahead of us, we popped in for a cup of tea after shopping in the town. "You'd be better off having a cream tea, it works out cheaper than tea, scones and jam," advised the Receptionist. So as advised, we opted for a cream-tea-for-two.
We seated ourselves in the conservatory restaurant and a little while later a waiter approached us to say that Chef was very sorry, but he had run out of clotted cream and was just whipping up some double cream for us, if that was alright? We assured him that it was, and a little while later, our cream tea appeared - a warm fruit scone each, whipped double cream in individual dishes, and two little pots of Wilkin & Son Tiptree Strawberry jam each.
The scones were substantial in size but light in texture and didn't crumble into pieces when split in two. They were, indeed, an ideal conveyance for the cream and jam (cream on first in Devon, jam on top!) The tea (I didn't specify a speciality tea) was strong and hot, just what we needed on a sunny but very cold early April afternoon.
Well done, Palace. Top marks, yet again, for simple, good food, at a reasonable price.
