“Great hotel in a great location”
Reviewed 6 August 2008

We booked our stay for 2 nights in an executive family room in July before moving on to a self catering apartment for the following week.

The hotel was so good that we tried to book up there for 2 nights at the end of our self catering holiday as well, but unfortunately it was full up.

Our bedroom (no 15)was large and had a lovely sea view from the front facing bay windows. It was nice and cosy with a double and single bed.The windows were double glazed units which opened right up .
The bathroom was large and clean but I was a bit dissapointed that only 1 small complimentary shower gel and shampoo was provided for the whole stay(I think a previous reviewer mentioned this as well). For the cost of the room,£175 a night for 2 adults & 1 Child,I expected to have them replenished each day.

The Hotel has standard, club & executive rooms.

When we glanced into other rooms on passing (my son wanted to go investigating around the corridors)they all seemed a good size and looked nice.
My son was invited to his new friends room which was above ours and said that it was equally as nice as ours!

The Breakfast was good, with a help yourself to juices, cereals, rolls, fruit & yoghurts etc. and then order the cooked breakfast,Tea,coffee, toast from the wailter/waitress.

The evening meals were excellent and serving staff very friendly and efficient.

One point that I would make is that IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH STAIRS,INFORM THE HOTEL AT TIME OF BOOKING AS EVEN THOUGH THE HOTEL HAS A LIFT, A FEW OF THE ROOMS HAVE TO BE ACCESSED BY STAIRS AS WELL.
(when we used the lift to our first floor room,we had more stairs to negotiate than if we just used the stairs in the first place )

We had good entertainment on each night of our stay.

The bar and sitting areas were very comfortable(pool table in the bar-only 50p a play).

Bar prices very reasonable for a hotel and beer kept very good.Good choice of beers & a very nice 'Thatchers'cider!

Plenty of free car parking in the car park.

Nice gardens to sit in and bar terrace.

Leisure centre is free to hotel guests. We never used the gym but it looked well equipped.
The pool is one of the cleanest pools we have ever used.A nice size and 4 ft deep all over. There are floats etc that you can use dotted around the poolside area. The jacuzzi is the same temperature as the swimming pool.
Seperate sauna and steam room located along the corridor from the changing rooms to the pool.
Hotel guests are provided with a free towel while using the leisure centre.
Lockers operate on a returnable £1 coin.

Changing rooms not large,but adequate.

The hotel is in a good location on Paignton sea front, facing the green where all the activities go on.
During the school summer holidays there is a lot of entertainment going on on the green for all ages.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a good standard of accommodation and a friendly service.

The Palace was our base for a full weeks coach holiday. It turned out to be a very good three star hotel. After a nine hour journey which was not unpleasant due to adequate refreshment stops, tea and biscuits were waiting on arrival, and our luggage was taken to our rooms before we had finished these. One of our cases went to room 17 instead of 11,a a simple mistake soon rectified, but along with one or two other minor incidents stopped us from giving the Palace full marks Our room was a good size, quite a large bathroom, basic complimentary toiletries supplied on arrival, but not replaced.View of the street, but this is the chance you take with a coach tour. The public rooms, including the restaurant were most impressive, they have obviously had a lot of investment and it shows. In the restaurant there was a good choice of menu, the food was good and plentiful and overall the service was excellent. There was entertainment nightly of a varying standard, nearly all these entertainers had to preside over two games of bingo before they did their act. Some did not seem keen, and who can blame them?
Our coach with 25 on arrived on Friday,a Welsh coach arrived on Monday with 44.This livened things up slighty for the rest of the week.On Wednesday night the Palace along with many other hotels in the area markets a variety show at the Babbacombe Theatre which makes for a different night out,the Welsh coach took all that wanted to go including 4 private guestsThe house was full,we were in row Z! On Thursday just the two of us went to the local theatre, also called the Palace to see an amateur production of an Agatha Christie play.We were pushed for time so we asked the head waitress if she could speed our meal up a a bit.She did, full marks to the restaurant staff for that,it made all the difference. The play was average, but this time the theatre was half full A fraction of the publicity the Babbacombe Theatre gets might make a difference.Back to the hotel itself and the outside area has to rate a mention,if weather permits, cream teas can be served on the lawn, and there are even a few sun loungers.Paignton? Well its OK,but a little tender loving care might be in order. The Palace Hotel? Very little to find fault with,if we returned to Paignton we would certainly use it again. So Friday morning and off went both the coaches, one back to Wales and ourselves back to Cumbria, not both with the same company, but no doubt to the delight of the private guests remaining! A final word about coach tours. Some people love them, some people loath them, but there is a place for them, they are not exclusively for the more mature as most people seem to think, although it has to be said they are probably the last holiday option for some people. We ourselves are both 'new' old age pensioners this year, are travelling more than usual, not always by coach, but its nice to see much older people than ourselves still getting about.Give them a break!

after reading the reviews on the hotel i was dissapointed to find that building work was going on.
the room i was staying in had an open ceiling rose/light fitting with wires visable.
as a health & safety advisor i found this to be very poor practice.,
wires were also visable in landing areas and had been left looped behind landing doors with no wire capping attached.
the reception staff on arrival were pleasent and helpful until i mentioned about the march deals that were advertised at £58.00 pppn dbb (i was told that unless they were booked for 2 nights they did not apply) yet on the website it stated "book any night midweek" they were not forthcoming with any offer to upgrade as i had not been given a CODE over the phone.
the hotel itself is overall good but is looking a bit weary in the bedrooms.
the breakfast in the morning was very good with helpful and attentive staff.

nice place after the refurb very helpful staff especially Robyn at the reception . I had booked a twin for Fri/sat night the room was a disgrace there was so much dirt/dust on the furniture I was able to write "CLEAN ME" on practically everything the bathroom was also a big let down there was grime & black hair every where, I complained to Robyn at the desk & it was cleaned but not that well....still hair in the bathroom. The hotel is in a great location the pool was warm and clean I found the Palace to be over all a really nice hotel ..
nice breakfast
friendly staff
good pool
I will be stopping there again but will ask for a clean room.

Just returned after spending two nights at The Palace - very good rates for D, B&B seasonal offer. Hotel very warm and comfortable. All staff were friendly and nothing appeared too much trouble - due to another commitment we asked to eat earlier one night and were supplied with copious amounts of salad and cold meats. Food was of a very high standard complimented by good service. Room had nice sea view and was very clean. Refurbishments are on-going at the moment (ground floor and gardens seem to be completed and look great) but cause little disruption to guests and no doubt will be finished to a high standard.

I enjoyed a one night stay whilst attending a conference in Torquay. The Palace is well located within walking distance of town and promenade.
Plus points: Refurbished to high standards, spacious rooms, good bathrooms. Clean. Excellent restaurant with attentive staff who speak English. Good value for money.
Negative: Nothing to complain about.

A few years ago I would have agreed with the reviewers who saw in this hotel "faded glory" but there have been refurbishments aplenty and, for the price, the accommodation, food and general ambience is excellent.
We had a basic room (no. 17) but with an updated bathroom - and with 2 comfy chairs! Staff excellent and appeared eager to ensure your stay was an enjoyable one. Food good, tasty and excellent waitresses.
The hotel is right on the front so is in a convenient location for the beach - indeed, there are sea views from the lounge and restaurant. Only downside is that there can be noise from the pub along the road (but this didn't affect us).
We have stayed at The Palace a number of times over the past 23 years - and will doubtless be back again!

  • Liked — Friendly staff
  • Disliked — They need to decide what to do about the front garden!!
