Make no mistake about it, at the Paignton Palace, the elderly person reigns supreme, from the stairlifts covering three steps to Sinatra and bingo in the lounge of an evening, but this had its advantages. In our early 30s with a baby you couldn't miss us, but everyone, guests and staff alike were friendly and welcoming, and there weren't any stressed parents, screaming children (other than ours, on occasion lol) or drunken youths to annoy us.
The hotel itself must have been incredible in decades gone by. Nowadays the grandeur has faded and it's battered around the edges, but retains a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. Our family room was massive with a partial sea view, perfectly clean and with everything we needed. We got a great half board deal and there was a good choice of evening meal.
Yes, the shower was something out of Professor Layton but was fine once we worked it out, and the lift broke as we were leaving but we weren't in it and as soon as we reported it they got onto maintenance. No hotel is going to be perfect but this gets five from me because everything worked towards an enjoyable stay. And it didn't smell of wee!!
