Travelodge Paignton Seafront
Ranked #8 of 17 Hotels in Paignton
Reviewed 1 September 2014

I stayed in August for 3 nights with my mum and daughter. This was our second stay. I learned last year about the parking problems from reading the reviews on here and we arrive at a time when several spaces are available and then leave the car there for the full stay. It is not worth the hassle of moving it. We are happy to spend the 3 days in Paignton at the beach or getting a train elsewhere for a change.

We witnessed the traffic warden there every morning. People complain about getting parking tickets, but when you leave your car on double yellow lines or block other cars in, then you should expect to get a ticket. The sign clearly states that you are not guaranteed a space and gives you all the rules. People need to take responsibility for their own actions. Park on yellow lines and accept the consequences!

The location is fantastic, a very short walk to the beach, the Pier, the Geopark. It is a lovely place to stay with children. The rooms are standard Travelodge but have been refurbished, so everything is new and clean and shiny. Perfectly adequate for 2 adults and one child.

We prebooked breakfast so it cost £6.65 each, with children free, so £13 a day for 3 breakfasts where you can eat as much as you like. The choice wasn't great though, just tomatoes/sausage/bacon/beans/scrambled egg and every day they ran out of sausages soon after 9.00am which is shocking when you can get breakfast until 10am. The best tip is to grab your food when they refresh the trays so that it is hot and freshly cooked. It would be nice to get a choice of egg rather than scrambled which comes out of a box I would think. There is a good choice of cereals, orange/apple juice and water , tea/coffee to drink. There is also croissants and fresh grapefruit.

My main complaint would be that the breakfast is all laid out in a very cramped corner and that people queuing for hot food block off the toaster, coffee, cereal etc. Also, every morning people had to wait for more plates, cutlery etc. But the staff were very accommodating when asked for more. There is a good selection of jam, honey etc for the toast.

I would say that the breakfast is good value for money for the quantity rather than the quality.

We ate a meal there on the first night. Not a massive choice, we had a meal deal and had fish and chips and it was absolutely lovely. Couldnt fault it, cooked to perfection. My daughter did not fare so well. We ordered chicken dippers and she was served chicken gougons which were listed as a starter and were southern fried. She said that they hurt her mouth, so we tried them and the pepper was so hot it was awful. I scraped all of the coating off and she ate the chicken.

I complained nicely, more in a way to point out that if they didn't have the chicken dippers they should have asked us for a second choice, not just exchange it for something different and very hot. The lady said that they had simply served the wrong thing. She was very helpful, lovely and kind and she brought my daughter a free ice cream to help take the pepper burn out of her mouth. So we had no cause for complaint.

We were in a family room, overlooking the side of the car park and would have had a sea view if we had been on a higher floor.

We didn't notice much noise from other rooms or guests. The cleaners came in every day and replaced the refreshments and also gave us additional milks etc when asked. The checkin process was simple and they got it right this year, as last year they had us down as 2 people and we were cramped into a double room, but this year had a family room.

It cost £159 for 3 people for 3 nights and that include breakfast for 3 days. Parking cost an additional £15 for 72 hours. I had also paid £20 for a weeks wifi, as the only options were 1 day or 1 week. But in the meantime, they have brought in a £3 a day charge, so I was refunded £8. £3 a day makes far more sense and is cheap and you can put several devices on that.

I would recommend it for a cheap family holiday and will be booking again for next year

Staff were friendly, but not enough of them so had to wait a whole to check in.
Car park very small and quite expensive - alternative car park is about 200 metres away and cheaper.
Rooms were good and generally this Travel Lodge is one of the better maintained.

Very impressed with the revamp…..new decor, beds, etc. Booked 2 x family rooms to sleep three adults in each. Apparently, the put you up beds weren't that comfortable but the new double beds were very good. New bathrooms excellent. Couldn't hear the road noise from our rooms. Didn't eat or drink there. Would consider staying again.

We're just back from a 5 night stay over the bank holiday weekend. We booked well in advance so got the cheaper rate which was a bargain.
We had a room on the first floor facing onto the car park which was perfect - you could leave the windows open at night without hearing any noise at all.
Room itself was a really good size and was cleaned every day. Towels were also replaced every day.
We had 2 meals in the restaurant at night. The first one was great but they had a young boy on duty the next night and unfortunately he burnt our dinner but served it to us anyway! That put us off going back.
The hotel itself is right at the far end of the seafront which is actually really good because it's away from the hustle and bustle. If you turn left when you leave, you're right onto Preston beach which is lovely and much quieter than the main beach.
The only real downside is the parking which is a bit of a nightmare. We paid for 5 days parking up front but couldn't get a space on some nights. My top tip would be - use the car park if you get a space straightaway and have no intention of taking your car out. If you take it out and try to get back in after around 2pm, you haven't got a hope of getting a space!! There is a car park on Colin Road which charges £2.20 for an overnight stay between 6pm-10am which is perfect if you're taking the car out for the day.

We had a one night stay here, bank holiday weekend. We had a ground floor room which was great. The rooms were clean, the bed was super comfy and the area was surprisingly quiet considering it's busy. Just a short walk to the beach and arcades pubs etc.
Staff were great.
Costs roughly £8-9 for a taxi in to Torquay.
Parking is very limited which was the only downfall. 30 spaces for 90+ rooms but we parked in a public car park just a 5 min walk away which was quite handy. If you arrive at mid day rather then check-in time (3pm) You would probably have a better chance at getting a space.
Anyway all in all it was a great stay and a good hotel and will definitely be returning in the future.

We booked the travelodge as an overnight stay before we traveled down to Cornwall, we have friends and family in the area so it was convenient for us to be able to have a quick catch up. the room was quite spacious considering we had a king size and 2 camp beds for the kids, our bed was super comfortable. breakfast was a disappointment, not many items to choose from if you wanted a cooked breakfast and was all packed in a tiny space to choose from.
