We dropped in on The Coach House after 1st reading the glowing reviews in Trip Advisor while on a week’s trip to Paignton. We stopped off there for lunch and have to say we had a very nice meal indeed. We had intended to drop in the previous evening but arrived at the Coach after the 8 o’clock end of serving time so headed to our flat. A subsequent chat with ‘Cookie’ today revealed that he could have accommodated us, so it was our loss. Earlier reviews had mentioned the friendliness of the establishment and to be honest I felt that was perhaps a bit false because how can somewhere be really classed as so ‘friendly’ with just one visit? Well I stand to be corrected and have to say it is a friendly pub with a cheerful landlady and an entertaining group of dinnertime regulars at the bar.
‘Cookie’ resides in the kitchen area but is not hidden away from contact with the customer and attended to our needs as well as preparing the food. We had fancied steak pie although the menu suggested the customer enquires as to what particular ‘pie’ was being served on the day. You can imagine our surprise when the landlady thought for a second then mentioned “I think it is badger, ferret and steak today “ You are without doubt thrown for a second or two after such a surprise reply but soon enter into the spirit and order knowing full well it is only steak…………………..well you hope it is ! :-)
(The establishment was clean and tidy, carpets not sticky and marked but clean. The wife went to the toilet and said afterwards they were clean too.)
The meal arrived on hot plates, which we like because you don’t feel as though you have to rush before your meal gets cold. Our steak was proper pieces, no fat or gristle with the correct level of marinated flavour and the accompanying chips were plenty of and the right texture. We both cleared our large plates. Afterwards Cookie emerged to have a chat and so we could pay the bill. Again I have to agree with other reviewers and say it was value for money. I know I repeat myself but not only at the right price but also quality and not made with cheap cuts of meat.. Anyone staying or living for that matter in Paignton or its surroundings would easily do far worse than visit the Coach House for a meal. They are freshly cooked and not the pre-packaged bought in ‘heat and serve’ type meals you often get in the ‘chain type restaurants.
Go on, give it a go and visit ‘Cookie’ and see his varied menu because it is a comfortable walk from the sea front and not to be missed.
