“Good Attitude”
Reviewed 13 May 2012

I took 25 people at 30mins notice on a Friday lunchtime -with only a limited time for lunch and were from Finland and had just been up at Glenkinchie.
They were all delighted with the food and drink they had and the staff had two large tables ready and quickly had all food orders in the kitchen and all my clients were very happy and really enjoyed themselves but managed to keep to schedule -all had open choice from menu so it was a challenge for the whole staff.
Other customers were not disrupted either -so well done to front of house and chefs.

“Excellent meal”
Reviewed 10 May 2012

We visited on election night and found the service to be good and well paced. The beer choices were Deuchars IPA and 80/ and whilst I personally may prefer it if a slightly more interesting artisan beer was available on tap the two on offer are both good solid choices and were well served and well kept. Moving onto the food, the mussels were delicious, the pizza was fabulous and huge, the fishcakes were well seasoned and the pork special was indeed special and packed with flavour. What was even more amazing was that this was all very reasonably priced.

“Outstanding”
Reviewed 10 May 2012

Went with my partner for dinner last Saturday. The service was excellent, with owner Paul serving alongside his staff, and talking to every table as they came in (the place was all but full - a very good sign).
Lovely selection of specials, and a really interesting menu.
I plumped for soup of the day - leek, potato & blue cheese; lovely, whilst my other half had mussels which were big and very tasty.
For main course, I was in a traditional mood and went for the home made lasagne, which I can assure you was the best I have had in years (and possibly ever) - and I told Paul as much.
My Partner had the steak Pizzaiola (Topped with tomato & Mozzarella) - a bit unusual, but the flavours really worked - it was delicious.
We finished with a cheese board, with a couple of pieces which weren't on the menu, as recommended by Paul. Delicious, and all round an excellent experience - we will definitely be back (and that's taking into account the 20 minute drive from Edinburgh City Centre!).

“As Good As It Gets In Haddington ....... But Slipping Standards?”
Reviewed 7 May 2012

Four of us went for a wee celebratory meal. The bistro (it looks, feels, and serves food like a real bistro - not bad in Haddington. It must be something to do with teh twinning!) is well known to all of us and we have never been disappointed. The food is always fresh and tasty, the service and ambience excellent, the choice of wine good and reasonably priced, and offers pretty good value for money.
This visit was not appreciably different. The tomato and sweet red pepper soup was first class (bread only arrived after asking for it), the mussels main course bountiful and flavoursome, and the duck breast cooked almost to perfection. one of the Waterside's old favourites however, the sirlong steak, lacked the good flavour we have come to expect here. It was still tender and cooked properly (medium was asked for and that was exactly what arrived to French standards, so full marks here) but the flavour lacked that mature taste one has come to expect. Perhaps a change of supplier, or just unlucky with this one. Only one dessert was asked for, the panna cotta, and it was fine. The cheese board, however, was extremely disappointing. The three cheeses seemed to have been lying out for too long a time, and the portions frugal.
Nit-picking I hear you say. Well perhaps, but I felt the Bistro was resting on its laurels a little bit and that can be dangerous if a serious competitor appears. We all want the Waterside to be the preferred choice in Haddington, and so complacency must not creep in to what is an excellent venue for informal dining.
