“Okay place to stay”
Reviewed 2 July 2013

We stayed at the Royal Mackintosh Hotel for a couple of nights on a B&B deal.
Our room was quite large, and had enormous windows which meant there was plenty of light and we could also enjoy the sea breeze. One thing we found a little strange was the arrangement of some of the furniture; the full length mirror was partially obscured by a desk which could have been placed against another wall in order to leave the mirror free of obstruction and the wardrobe could have swapped places with the small table that had the kettle on it, rather than standing in a sort of no man's land near the bed.
However, the bed was comfortable and there was a sofa which looked like it expanded into a bed if needed for families. There was a decent hairdryer provided in the room and an extra heater in the wardrobe too. The en suite was also nice and light and the shower was good, although it would have been nice if there had been a shelf to put toothbrushes etc on (it's not always nice to have to leave things on the sink by the taps).
The breakfasts were okay and the service was qiute good. The bar seemed popular and there was seating outside too.
Check in and out was efficient and the staff were friendly.
There are lots of hotels in Dunbar and I think we'd be tempted into trying one of them rather than returning to the Royal Mackintosh in the future. Having said that, this wasn't a bad place to stay and certainly other travellers seem to have enjoyed the food and accommodation.

Beautiful atmosphere, relaxing music, the staff were 10 *, very attentive, food well worth the money, we had a hi-life diners card, which made no difference to the excellent service we received. I will be defiantly be going there once a week, even when my card runs out, it's worth it!

We were going to a wedding venue just outside Dunbar with no accommodation, so booked the Royal Mackintosh. Lovely little place. We arrived a couple of hours before the official check-in time, as did a few of the other guests. The staff bent over backwards to get people into their rooms early - really appreciated, thank you! The rooms were spotless. Room 10 is massive, we loved it. Nice
little bar area, not expensive. The manager drew us a map to help us get to the wedding venue, and the girl in reception booked us taxis for later that evening. The staff were so friendly and helpful, really went the extra mile for us.
Comfy beds, great night's sleep. Yummy cooked breakfast, good choice and excellent service. £80 a room for great service and clean, comfy surroundings is good going I think.
The only place to stay in Dunbar, thank you Royal Mackintosh!

spent 2 nights in room 20, while furniture and carpets good, decor shabby especially bathroom, windows did not open and on the point of falling out as were some in the corridor , no extractor fan, bathroom real shabby, shower went from normal , to cold , to burning then back to normal,, not for kids this one. Lots of cobwebs, on light fittings and window, needs a good clean.
Downstairs ok, most off staff very friendly but 2 girls in the bar on the Saturday night had a different attitude, they just didnt want to know you , very unfriendly, seemed to bare a grudge if they had to serve and could do with manner training , they dont know the word "Thankyou ".
saturday breakfast was very good, Sunday breakfast. , must have been a change of staff, only 2 out of 10 for that one,, aye,, poor. Hotel , a good way to go yet.

This is a great place to go for a nice drink, or meal. The staff are genuinely friendly and welcoming, and the food is good.
We had a great Sunday Lunch there which is served from 12 - 8pm which is fantastic, and avoids that awful rush to get in before 2pm. Décor is smart, simple and comfortable, and you can eat in the bar, or in the smarter panelled restaurant. The food is good, and very reasonable, and you truly feel you can just sit and relax and take your time - a rare treat these days

All in all a very nice place to stop.

This wonderful location is a great place to stay if you are planning to go to Edinburgh and don't want to go to a hotel in the city. A 20 minute ride on the train takes you directly to the center of the city and across the street to the tour buses. The train station is a short 3-5 minute walk from the hotel. From our room had a view of the North Sea. They give you plenty of choices of tea or hot chocolate packets and a glorious breakfast with many choices, from a full Scottish breakfast to just bacon and hash browns, which was my favorite. Even though she was busy doing everything in the morning, the girl who waited on us, (didn't get her name) was friendly and always smiling. No Wi-Fi in the room but there was free wireless in the dining room and bar. A short walk can take you to High Street where there are museums, stores, pubs, wonderful places to eat and wonderful up close views of the North Sea. There are no elevators so lugging suitcases up stairs is a little difficult, which is the only downfall for those 60 or older like me. It was also within in easy driving distance to The Seabird Center in North Berwick and Tantallon Castle. I doubt if I will make it back there, but if I did, this is where I would stay.

Room Tip: Ours was a double room with a view of the sea directly above the dining room. We could hear music f...
