“What You Want From a Local Pub”
Reviewed 28 September 2013

We came to town for the festival of traditional music, met a local who recommended this pub, walked by it a few minutes later, and made a lunch reservation. The place is comfortably weathered. We had sauteed scallops, the smoked haddock fishcake, a ploughman's lunch featuring local cheeses, and one of the most lively cask conditioned beers we've ever had. The service from a local lad was excellent and the price is reasonable.

Does it get any better than this? Yes is does.

Down in the pub a duo (guitar and violin) were playing mournful ballads, while a trio of white haired sailors who were in from a nearby island were sipping their whiskeys and beers. They reeled us in and regaled us with good natured tales and adventures that we will never forget. The Vollie is everything a good pub should be.

“A pub with atmosphere”
Reviewed 7 September 2013

Scotland is short on pubs with atmosphere and long on big rooms with plastic tables selling fizzy beer from metal kegs. The VA is an old fashioned small pub, shabby chic, selling proper ale from wooden kegs. There is always at least one guest beer, properly kept and well served. So first off if you won't drink ice cold, homogenized pop like me, then seek out the VA and get your ale fix. The good news is they are open pretty much all day for beer and food which can make for a very pleasant summer afternoon if you have the necessary nominated driver!! The food is all pretty much home cooked and the pub staples are first class and excellent value for money. However, being in a costal town with a harbor, the local lobster and fish are their strength so have the wild sea bass, lobster or what ever else is on and you will not be disappointed

“The Vollies”
Reviewed 26 August 2013

One of the best pub meals in East Lothian. First class food at a most reasonable cost, great choice of ales and wines and a friendly staff. Happy to accept children

“An adequate meal”
Reviewed 30 July 2013

The meal here was adequate....nothing special....just basic pub food. The people in the pub were friendly....the upstairs area is quieter than eating in the bar area. There is also outside seating.
