“Showing its age, but its grace, too”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

Being desert-dwellers, we always try to reserve a room with a sea view, and The Bayswell Park Hotel did not disappoint us. Our room looked over the dramatic cliffs of Dunbar and out to the Bass Rock. Stunning stuff.

The room definitely showed its age, but it also said something about its past which must have been glorious. The bathroom plumbing was dated as well, but nothing that couldn't be easily dealt with.

The hotel's juxtiposition to the cliffs was a big plus - perfect for scenic walks, and the hotel's location is close enough that it only takes about 8 to 10 minutes to reach the high street of Dunbar for shops and restaurants.

There are nice choices for breakfast. We arrived at the dining room about 8:15 or so, and it was empty. "Are we the last to arrive," we asked. "No, you're the first!" With the sound of the sea in the air, it's easy to sleep in at the Bayswell Park.

The staff was courteous, friendly and helpful.

Overall, staying at the Bayswell Park Hotel is rather like stepping back in time, and that's a really nice thing to do now and then.

Room Tip: A seaview room is great, but a number of them are up a couple of staircases. It can "wind"...

Stayed here as it was the only hotel within my allocated budget for work. I was not disappointed. For £65 I had a lovely room with an incredible sea view and a jacuzzi bath. This is what I would pay for Premier Inn with none of those added extras.

The staff were lovely and friendly and both evening meal and breakfast were stunningly good.

Cannot understand the unfavourable reviews.

Room Tip: Definitely need a sea view.

Had booked a single room with sea view but was swapped to a double without the view. Having said that the view during breakfast was stunning so recommend pressing for a sea view room if you can get it.
With limited supply, accommodation in Dunbar is pricey generally and I have stayed in equally good or better hotels elsewhere for much less. However it was warm, pleasant, clean and while perhaps dated, the dated character lent something to remember it by compared to more functional modern hotel chains. Subject to the pricing I would return.

Stayed in numerous hotels in Dunbar recently but The Bayswell Hotel is by far the best to stay at. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly, the rooms are great if you have a new one but also good if you don't. Great sea views from rooms and restaurant as it's situated on a cliff top. Nothing in Dunbar compares. What's not to like. Highly recommend.

Overnight stay on our way North, super room with view, welcoming staff very good breakfast. Highly recommended. Nice walks along the cliffs. Very surprised that the room had no Information pack. Dunbar is a good base for visiting Edinburgh.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a sea view ! It is spectacular.

Views out the window were spectacular, opening the window to hear the sea (wonderful!). The food was superb, everything you could ask for at breakfast and the best porridge and poached eggs ever. We had a Jacuzzi bath and loved it. The shower was powerful and hot. The staff were all very friendly. The whole establishment was clean. We wanted a relaxing weekend away to rejuvenate our batteries and that's exactly what we got... There's a beer garden outside - and we were blessed with a beautiful sunny weekend (April 2014)... There's also a path that takes you along the water edge (there's a fair few steps though)... we loved that. The small town centre had different shops, a welcome break from the run of the mill shopping centres. The small bar inside the hotel was quiet, it lacked atmosphere - but I'm sure a few punters in there, a bit of mood lighting and music and it would also be a winner... When bright, empty and quiet - it does not appeal to my taste. I like dark, busy and loud,,, but not too loud as to disturb guests (each to their own). We had an evening meal in the conservatory - haggis neeps and tatties to start, steaks (one medium rare and one well done)...all to order with wine, well prepared and presented. Would not hesitate to recommend this place... we will be going back and will recommend to friends...

Room Tip: Sea view by request I believe -
