We are self driving around Scotland and were originally staying in Edinburgh, but after looking at the prices of accommodation, decided to stay in Dunbar instead. We booked into The View Bayside Hotel for two nights and were lucky to get Room 12. It was fantastic. It was a huge room of 10 metres long, gorgeous bay windows that looked directly out to the North Sea and the ruins of Dunbar Castle. The staff were very friendly and helpful and a hot breakfast was included. The restaurant at the hotel also had stunning views and delicious meals that were reasonably priced. It also had its own little bar room. Dunbar itself was a quaint little harbour town with a lot of charm and history. We drove into Edinburgh for the day and found that we had no dramas as the highway got us there quickly.

Room Tip: Make sure you book Room 12!

We stayed for 3 nights and there was no chef so consequently we had to eat out for all of our meals bar breakfast. We asked for a croissant at breakfast and burnt it so had another one. The next morning the burnt croissant was out on the breakfast table! The room was dated and the TV had not been hard wired so not good for toddlers. The carpet was filthy too (room 9). There was no bath plug and asking repeatedly all day we finally got three left in the room. The next day they took them away when they cleaned the room! Despite all this the location is stunning and the staff were all very nice. They were also very accommodating by giving us another room in the early hours of the morning as my husband had food poisoning and needed to be away from the children (note food poisoning was not from the hotel as they were not serving food apart from breakfast). Another thing I would suggest is that they have a path up to the front door as it is a big gravel drive and a nightmare having to drag pushchairs and wheelchairs up it. This was the closest thing we could find in Dunbar for disabled facilities for my grandmother who stayed in one of the new rooms downstairs with the hot tubs. However to get to them you have to go through a random back sitting room, out of a patio door and along the cliff so, not suitable for someone who is completely wheelchair bound.

Room Tip: Don't stay in room 9!

We stayed at the Bayswell in August 2014 on our way to the Highlands. The hotel is in a good location in easy walking distance of the town with fantastic views out to sea. We had a sea view room which was large, clean and comfortable with a large en-suite with bath and shower.
There did appear to be a lack of staff. I only remember seeing one staff member, who checked us in and served us at the bar. Drinks are expensive, with one pint and a glass of white wine just in excess of £10. When we checked out there was no one at the desk so we just left the key. There seemed to be some disorganisation, this may have been due to the recent kitchen fire that we were informed about. Due to the fire the restaurant was closed and there was only a continental breakfast, which was adequate, but there was no one to greet guests in the morning and this led to some confusion and lack of tables being cleared.

Room Tip: It's worth paying for a sea view

Stayed here for one night whilst babysitting and found it very nice. The staff couldn't be more helpful. The room we had faced the street but that was fine as it's quiet anyway. Nice bar area and breakfast is great. In my opinion, the only downside is that the place needs a face lift really. The carpets and decor in our room were a bit past it. But please don't be put off, it's in a fine location in a lovely town.

We stayed at the Bayswell Hotel, Dunbar, for one night on our way up to the Highlands of Scotland at the end of July. The hotel is only a 5 minute walk into town and yet located far enough away from the hustle and bustle, right next to a coastal footpath.

We had the deluxe 4 poster room, which was lovely and extremely spacious with a sofa and a chaise longue, in addition to the grand bed. The room has two large bay windows overlooking the shoreline, which afforded spectacular views. The bathroom was just as luxurious with both a walk in double shower and a huge bath on traditional stone flooring.

In the evening, we ate in the restaurant where the food was excellent, but at times attention to a few of the smaller details were lacking. The staff were all very friendly, courteous and helpful, we were made to feel as though nothing was too much trouble.

In the morning breakfast very nice, with a good selection of items on offer. The waitress was pleasant and helpful. The only criticism was that the porridge is kept warm in a slow cooker on the buffet table which did make it look and taste congealed.

Checkout was quick and easy and the receptionist was very helpful in giving advice on travelling to our next destination and things to do when we got there.

In summary, the views from the seafront rooms are some of the best we have seen, a real asset to the hotel and we would not hesitate to stay here again.

The view alone was enough to make me want to come back. Add to that the amazingly friendly staff and I can not say enough about this hotel! I was so tired when I arrived that I didn't feel like looking for food (which often happens when I travel since I tend to do long trips with a lot of driving) they were more than happy to feed me. The food was delicious.

Hi guys, check out this place. A fab suite with private hot tub, excellent value for money. Staff go that extra, we had a celebration at no extra cost they provided flowers & bubbly. Housekeeping excellent too, our suite was immaculate each day on our return. Such a great location, Dunbar pretty especially the harbour & private beach to the hotel too! But easily convenient, for North Berwick & Edinburgh, which are over priced with accommodation!! Enjoy The Bays well. We thoroughly did, & returning soon.

Room Tip: Liking space? Book a suite, worth that little bit extra
