“Good public areas; grim red bedroom”
Reviewed 22 August 2010

We could not; believe the contrast between the photos of bedrooms on the websites & the reality of the nice, airy public areas/lounge & sweeping staircase, modern lounge/furniture and our grim cramped, red bedroom where we unfortunately had booked a 4 night 'romantic break'. I nearly cried when I realised what we'd got -for £72 per night- a shabby red carpeted (inc in bathroom), cramped, twin room with mis-matching floral bedspreads & ancient curtains- with the hem hanging unevenly. The awful blood-red paint on walls was flaked off in places, the room was very small. Only one ancient, stained brown velour chair (for two of us) & very narrow pine twin beds. Manky, tiny bathroom with mould round shower & dank red carpet on floor. UGH!
Saving graces: lovely breakfasts - in somewhat over-full breakfast room; clean towels changed daily, enthusiastic host/hostess.
But boy, were we glad to escape that horrible oppressive red bedroom.

We had a pleasant bedroom with well appointed en-suite bathroom.
Everything was clean and tidy. The lounge was spacious and comfortable. The hotel was conveniently situated being only a few minutes walk from the High Street, Old Shanklin and about 10 minutes from the beach.
The breakfast was excellent with a wide choice including substantial full English all of which were waiter served – which made a pleasant change from the usual buffet arrangements.

Considering the competive price we would certainly recommend this hotel as offering excellent value.

Typical B&B style accommodation with a nice lounge, bar and dining room. Owners/Staff welcoming, efficient and professional. A good choice for the price charged.

I have read a few nasty reviews for this hotel but don't be put off. Yes, the hotel is a bit tired and shabby in places but that's not the end of the world. The people were warm and friendly on arrival and the room was ready early and they let us leave our luggage there with no quibble. The room was clean and comfortable even though the four poster was a bit squeaky! Made us laugh :) Yes, its on the main road from Newport to Shanklin but if you've ever been to the Isle of Wight, you will know that the traffic is never that busy although this might be different in the height of the season. We slept well and had a hearty breakfast which was tasty, hot and well presented. This place is excellent value for money and you get exactly what you pay for. I'd go back anytime.

My Husband, 82 year old Mother and 28 year old Son and i have just returned from our 3rd visit at this homely, very welcoming, friendly Hotel. We were greeted warmly as always by Agneiszka, she and her Husband Mike with the help of Taff (the very lovely Welsh Dad of Mike) run this very comfy, and friendly Hotel. They are all extremely hard workers and are gradually modernising each of the Bedrooms. My Husband and i were in the brand new number 4, complete with flat screen tv, walk in shower and beautifully decorated,. My Mother was in number 1 which suits her well as she is disabled and to be on the ground floor is a big bonus. The bed was this time a little low down for her but the room itself is comfortable and clean with en-suite and tea and coffee making facilities. Our Son was upstairs in a very sunny comfy room, again with all the facilities overlooking the very attractive gardens complete with a Red telephone Box, which can be seen as you arrive at the Hotel. If you enjoy a Belly Busting!!!! breakfast, then look no further...you wil not need another thing until your evening meal. George the chef knows just how to hit the spot, with an extensive menu and it is served to your table with a smile, and nothing is to much trouble for any of the staff. The evening meal if you want one can be booked at Breakfast and again a good menu (also an imaginative menu for children). We ordered Roast Lamb and it arrived with masses of various veg and super Roast potatoes, and you can help yourself, its actually a job finding room on the table for it all!!! we enjoyed 4 courses inc coffee in the lounge after + a bottle of wine for £50 for the 4 of us...incredible. In the evening we like to sit in one of the 2 lounges and relax with a drink from the bar and play cards, in the adjoining lounge there is a large flat screen tv and very comfy seating and mood lighting throughout. We just love Somerton Lodge and would frequent it more often if we had the opportunity. Apparently one couple go back 4 times a year...now that is good recommendation. This Hotel is suitable for couples, singles, families and disabled and is very central to the Shanklin Theatre and local shops. We can't wait to return, we are missing it already. Thanks Agneiszka and Mike.

we stayed here for two nights in October 2009
most of my comments are pros, it was easy to find, very nice downstairs with bar and fantastic breakfasts included in the price
the room was warm with nice extras and was fine for us, you can also have free wifi if you bring your laptop
the owners were very friendly and was easy to come and go when we pleased
the cons are a very squeaky bed that would rule out any activities apart from sleep!
Also the bathroom was very outdated and the shower although warm had no power at all!
overall it was nice but not sure i would stay here again, but maybe i am being too fussy so would still recommend it to a friend

Stayed here for one night, it's a great place. Run by such friendly, welcoming people who couldn't have been more helpful. We were given a rear-facing double room with en-suite, its decor was probably a wee bit dated, but was more than good enough for what we were after. Really comfy bed, good sized wardrobe, TV, tea & coffee, hairdryer ... ervything you would come to expect. Single-glazed, but was still pin-drop quiet, and warm enough at night.

Didn't eat dinner in the hotel (the main street is only five or ten minutes away and has plenty of bars and restaurants) but did have breakfast as it's included in the price, and it was marvellous, and really sets you up for the day ahead.

Our only regret is that we only got to spend one night here - Shanklin is such a nice place that we'll stay there again next time we go to the Isle of Wight, and we would definitely book another stay at Somerton Lodge.
