“Good holiday at Daish's Shanklin”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2014

We found the hotel clean and well appointed. The room was ok but we did expect a little more as we had paid premium rate, so we would have expected to find just little extras there such as shower gel and cap and maybe bathrobes and also a hair dryer in the room (you can get one from reception) but it would be nice to have one in the room and also a long mirror, small things ;but they would make a difference in paying for a premium room. The entertainment was excellent and the food was good. All the staff are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble. We are going back for Christmas so see you there folks!!

Room Tip: book early

Over about four years I have been to Daish's solo and with friends.

Its situation at the top of the hill to the thatched Shanklin Old Town is enviable with town tea/dining places and shops close by, hotel staff are splendid while en-suite bedrooms are not posh but comfortable with good beds.

Breakfast is fine with welcome insulated pots of tea and coffee but dinners now let the hotel down. Seasonable vegetables are announced on the menu. Almost all are from a freezer. Turkey and pork roasts were not good, seeming to have seen quite some time since they saw a bone and being pretty tasteless anyway.

Starters and desserts are cheaply, easily produced and O.K.but a treat of melon means a few slivers there, a touch of grapes and a small patch of red sauce on a nicely presented plate.

Little was home-made on main courses while the breaded plaice and chips were old before reaching the table. Favourites like steak and kidney pie, curry or liver and bacon were missing during our stay. Dinner quality was NOT good and we only enjoyed half the meals.

Evening entertainment worked with a quiz, two bingo sessions and singers, generally drawling rather than reaching any kind of high notes and best when inviting audience participation. There was also entertainment especially for children, including seeing and touching a few lizards and snakes. That was magic to see under good hotel staff supervision, kids being fascinated and so gentle with the creatures.

Daish's has nice grounds with a fine fenced children's play area and lots of benches with tables also at the front of the hotel. Internal seating is limited, other than in the bar areas. Alcohol and snacks prices are very fair.

Over the year.the mainly from Yorkshire to Sussex coach parties clientele are over sixties couples or small parties.

The welcome and value is very good - apart from dinners which should be soon improved as should the quality of singers on evenings. I lived on the Island for a long time and have seen far more talent there than was on show.

Room Tip: Ask for a room where you cannot hear evening entertainment. There are rooms at an extra cost overlo...

We went their by Daish's coach from Walsall and stayed for 6 days
The coach trip was good and the hotel experience was excellent. Our room was on the ground floor and opened up onto the very nice garden.
The meals were of a reasonable quality and quantity, the staff throughout the hotel were very pleasant and accommodating, and finally the other quest were really nice and friendly

Room Tip: Ground floor Number 40

Daish hotels have a plus in the fact that they coach you there. The hotel is very old and has some lovely parts that have been kept thankfully. It was a problem for some of the people that the lift was not working, one poor lady had to stop on each landing for 5 minutes each time she went to her room.
We were happy with the break, the room was good (we upgraded) although more sockets would be helpful, there were only two, neither by a mirror, we had to move one mirror and unplug the kettle to use a hairdryer, also more towel rails in the bathroom.
Food was good for the price, no one could go hungry at breakfast, the evening meals were good with a reasonable choice. (although we had to order starters and main at breakfast which we did not like but understand saves a lot of waste) Staff were helpful and polite. We would go back, but intend to try their new hotels first.

Room Tip: Upgrade if possible we had room 4 which was ok

Just passing by, we noticed a beautiful lawn with numerous tables and chairs shaded from the sun with parasols, inviting one in for a cream tea. We were not disappointed - a very pleasant waitress took our order which arrived promptly, 2 fruit scones each with a generous portion of clotted cream and jam also butter NOT straight from the fridge. This came accompanied with a large white teapot with boiling water for a refill. Excellent value as I believe we paid under £4 each.We left feeling really refreshed. A taste of old England in Shanklin Old Village.

Got a last minute cancellation with Daish's but this was our second visit to Daish's Shanklin hotel. This time we had room no. 48 one of the refurbished rooms, although slightly smaller than the other rooms in this block because of the slanted back wall, there was still the lovely fitted bathroom. The food as usual with Daish's was excellent as was the service all through the hotel.
(Bar manager Gordon even remembered us) . Would recommend Daish's to anyone who wants good hotels, excellent service, and friendly drivers, all at an exceptionately reasonable price.
