“50/50 I'm afraid”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 April 2014

Hotel is, or was undergoing refurb, there was no disturbance I have to say. Restaurant and bar lovely, good service and food good.

Unfortunately, we seemed to be in one of the rooms yet to be done......wall damp all weekend, curtains hanging off, bed bases down to the thread, drawers missing a drawer, carpet stains :(

It was room 139 sea view, which was great, but being out off from the fact they would actually rent this out and not close it, means we wouldn't return, with so much choice of hotels over there it's not worth the risk

Stayed at this hotel it was being renovated so only a few rooms spare. Had to be moved cos room wasn't up to scratch. when we moved rooms it was a lot nicer. Very quite no noise from outside only a slight sound of the sea it was lovely and calming. Very nice and helpful staff.

Room Tip: Nice and quite rooms.

The hotel is now under new management who have started a refurbishment programme. This work has not been helped by damage caused during the recent bad winter. We found the hotel very clean and the staff very friendly. Our bedroom on the second floor had a sea view, and was clean comfortable and spacious. The downside was the size of the bathroom. However the shower was good and there was plenty of hot water...
The home cooked meals were plentiful, good quality with an adequate choice.
There was entertainment on one of our evenings.
We hope to return to this hotel, and would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: We had a second floor room with a sea view and this was excellent

This was the first week opening of Shanklin Beach under new management. The refurbishment was behind schedule due to roof damage. I stayed with a friend in a twin room with a sea view. Although the room had not been refurbished it was clean and comfortable and the view was beautiful.
The manager and his staff were friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. We enjoyed the food. It was fresh with plenty of choice given what we had paid. The soups were home made and vegetables were fresh not frozen. The dining room was pleasant and Monica our waitress was superb.
We had no complaints.
The reception and internet access is poor but this seemed to be the same until you were further up into Shanklin.
Two comments. Please try to accommodate national holiday drivers when there is nothing on the menu they can eat due to special diets. Also staff in our opinion should be allowed to keep their own tips. If I tip a staff member for exceptional service I don't expect that tip to go into a central pot. Also it would encourage others to be more accommodating and work harder. I wouldn't hesitate to return to this hotel and felt they had made a great start.
Sandra and Karen.

Stayed from Friday till Sunday at this newly refurbished hotel. Lovely helpful reception staff. However, the coach party due to book in had cancelled, meaning we were virtually alone in the hotel. Therefore the dining room was not opened and we had our meals in the adjoining bar, which is also about to be refurbished. No problem with that, we thought.

Due to a mix up our dinner did not arrive in time for us to eat before we had to go to the theatre but Martin was extremely apologetic and helpful, even offering to take us to the theatre and supplying and complimentary bottle of wine. Jill also came to talk to us the day after and was very sweet and apologetic.

The bar/waiting staff are very young (and ? inexperienced... e.g. "How would you like your gammon steak cooked ?" The toast came in a dish - "Be careful, the dish is red hot"... and the butter portions were also in there, reduced to oil. Hot milk with our morning tea, and waiting 10 minutes for cornflakes and condiments. The ice cream sundae took 15 minutes to arrive because the chef was "making the sauce". (??) Considering we were the only ones eating, we couldn't understand why we had almost half an hour wait for our meals.

However, I am sure when in full swing the dining room service will be excellent and the hotel will offer excellent customer service.

Our first floor room was extremely comfortable, spotlessly clean, lovely beds and brand new ensuite. The only item missing was a toilet brush. The view over the sea was amazing.

Just one major cause for concern were the fully opening windows in our room, one of which had a coffee table under. I cannot imagine how this passed Health & Safety inspections, as a toddler would be out of there in a flash! (See photos).

Parking was free in the road from October till end of March.

Room Tip: First and second floor rooms have sea view. First floor rooms have a balcony.
