“friendly and welcoming”
Reviewed 19 August 2011

We decided on a last minute two night trip to the Isle of Wight with 6 year old grand-daughter. Very helpful when booking and even arranged our ferry crossing. Large family room with small double and a single bed. All the amenities you would expect, ensuite, coffee making facilities and hair dryer. Bit like going back in time to the 1960s. Meals were adequate and it seemed that the order was taken through one door and came out of the other within seconds.
Very clean throughout. Would definitely go again with grand-daughter but would prefer room NOT on the ground floor as we didn't feel happy leaving a window open. Small indoor swimming pool which made our grand-daughter's day. Am thinking of taking my elderly mother who is on sticks but although there was a ramp into the hotel I think it might be a problem getting to the reception and dining room as there seemed to be steps everywhere. However I didn't look into this so they may have a cunning plan.

Room Tip: the higher up the better view

We returned to the Channel View Hotel at Shanklin this year after a two year break. We are pleased to say that it is as good as ever. A really clean, tidy hotel. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food remains superb. You will not be disappointed!

Room Tip: The extra expense for a Premier Plus room is certainly worth it.

Booked for two days when I went to visit my dear old Ma. The hotel is clean, tidy, and well maintained. The staff are top quality and it was like a visit back in time when people were proud of there work. The hotel manager must live on site as he was at the office 24/7 and this seemed to be the hub of a hotel run well. location is good and central for beech and town. Would defiantly visit again.

Room Tip: Rooms were clean tidy and spacious.

Hard one this. Been to the Isle of Wight on many occasions and the hotels always seem to be up market guest houses. To be fair to the Channel View, this is probably the best hotel so far.
It is very clean and the staff and management are top class and they were able to book us a ferry at short notice on a busy weekend. Our room was very large and had a wonderful sea view.
The breakfast tables are very close together and that smacks of guest house. Usually with 3 star hotels, you have a breakfast bar to help yourself to cereals, fruit etc.
All in all would recommend the Channel View and would stay again.

Warm and welcoming, this applies to the hotel and its staff. The food is plentiful and excellent and the rooms are always clean and comfortable. It seems nothing is too much trouble for the proprietors and their excellent teams of receptionists, kitchen and restaurant staff, room maids, and of course the bar where there is a good choice of wines, spirits and soft drinks.

Room Tip: The views from this cliff top hotel are worth asking for.

We had seen the excellent reviews on tripadvisor and booked a four night stay. Booking for the hotel and the ferry was very easy - the hotel booked the ferry on our behalf and the ferry tickets were sent direct to our door.Car parking is easy, either in the car park or on Hope Road in front of the hotel.Access to reception was easy via a ramped path - this avoids several steps.
Our reception at the hotel was very friendly and informative, the room (36 on 2nd floor) was spacious, clean, bright (lovely bay window with side view of sea) and easy to use.The bathroom had a bath and shower and was kept very clean.Free internet access worked very well. All staff were very friendly and helpful. Very good quality plain cooked food, although not a vast choice, three or four starters, mains and desserts were adequate for us - if you like lots of hot and spicy food then perhaps you might struggle although a curry was offered one evening. The service was all waiter/waitress - no buffet breakfast - which tended to make the experience more personal. Our every need was met, down to the lemon and ginger tea bags preferred by the wife!
The hotel is located at the top of the road down to the esplanade and beach. It is right next to the Coastal Path in both directions. It is a fifteen minute walk to Shanklin High Street and 'Old Town'.
The age group of guests tended towards 55 plus although some families with young children were staying and seemed to be catered for very well.We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay and were so pleased to have found a hotel where the owners and staff obviously enjoyed providing a consistently excellent service.Try it - you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: We phoned the hotel direct to find a room with a bath and got room 36.It is right by the lift on the...

The Good.........

Location - walkable to town, beach & station
Staff - very friendly
Bed - was comfortable

The Bad..........

Room was disappointing. Premier rooms only give you a side view of the sea, nothing else. It was very basic and needed updating. For a premier room I would have expected extra touches such as fridge, decent Tv etc..

Breakfast - Was totally waitress led, nothing was out for you to choose. You have to ask for everything. We thought that the food was freshly cooked to order due to this but it was obvious that it wasn't. Your order came out of the kitchen within minutes, not long enough to fry an egg and certainly tasted like it had been sitting around, and the toast was cold.

On the whole it was comfortable enough but certainly wasn't anything special
