Upper Chine Holiday Cottages & Apartments
Reviewed 7 June 2014

We've just stayed at Chapel Cottage at Upper Chine. The cottage itself was great - it was clean and had everything we needed with basic supplies of washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, loo roll etc provided. The main bedroom was very spacious and the other bedrooms fine. The garden area was a mix of decking and patio space with sun loungers and table/chairs and usefully a washing line (pegs were also supplied). It was a great location with a 20 min walk to the beach (at 3 year old speed) going past various tea rooms/pubs (although we didn't actually sample them). If I am being really picky then the bed was a bit on the soft side for me and a cheese grater would have been handy.

One of the downsides was the wifi connection - although the complex itself has several connections accessing them within the cottage was distinctly patchy (was OK in the garden or the car park but very intermittent in the house and Vodafone data coverage was also dropping in and out). The games room was good with pool table, gym equipment and childrens play area which was great for toddlers. There was also equipment for the beach (buckets/spades etc) that could be borrowed and over the road from the cottage was a lovely green park with play area.

The main disappointment was the pool which, as other people have said, was cold. It was around 28 degrees which was too cold for our 3 year old to spend much time in (we ended up buying a wetsuit wrap after our first dip to keep him warmer). There are also no changing rooms so you either had to change poolside or head back to your cottage wrapped in towel. Luckily we had good weather so spent a lot of time out and about exploring the island and didn't need to rely on the pool for entertainment.

Currently at upperchine again for our 3rd visit, staying in the church mews. Beautiful house, veryclean and comfortable with all the conforts of home. Having the hot tub is great. Upperchine is probably the nicest cleanest holidaycottages I have ever used. Great location from old shanklin. The only negative is the pool is far too cool. However this wont stop us from recommending or returning.

We stayed at the Upper Chine Cottages in Shanklin for a week. Upper Chine cottages are a very short walk from Shanklin village which as excellent tea rooms and the spectacular Shanklin Chine just off the beach.

The entire property is extremely well kept and clean. We stayed in Apartment 6, which was very well furnished and had everything you want from a self catering apartment. We spent every day out exploring the Isle of Wight, and getting back in the evenings was like coming home.

The swimming pool was a tad over-chlorinated, but well looked after. The kids play area and gym were fantastic. The property is fronted with a large green, and the Upper Chine management and staff have kindly provided tennis rackets, balls and other equipment that you can take on to the green to use.

This is a great place to stay with family and kids if you are holidaying at Shanklin, Ventnor or Sandown.

Family holiday in 'Foxes Den' (baby, toddler, Mummy, Daddy and the Grandparents!) The Cottage is fine. Has just the right amount of kit in the kitchen. Maybe lacking a bit with the glasses. Pegs supplied, a few dishwasher tablets to start you off, a couple of tea towels. There's a clothes airer, iron and board, vacuum and plenty of toilet roll to see you through the first few days.

Even a little welcome bowl, like a hotel, with a couple of bourbons, sugar packets and UHT milks! Nice touch.

The patio has a table and chairs and there's plenty of greenery. Beyond your little plot there's room to roam around and look down at the start of the Chine. Directly over the road is a huge green space with a playground in. Great for running around, playing football and watching the ducks.

My two year old was scared of the big fox-in-hunting-gear on the stairs, and I don't blame him. The huge tv made up for that.

The wifi doesn't work in Foxes Den, but the guest info does tell you that it probably won't. If you need wifi, go over to Reception and sit upstairs in the family room, it's perfect up there! I didn't take my son to the family room because the weather was fine, but I know he'd have loved all the Little Tykes (?) climb on, ride on, play equipment.

Bath fills up quite nicely using just the hot tap. You get a warm bath, but not a hot bath. The water heater isn't large.

Tried out the pool. Pool is ok. It's not warm unless you keep moving. They claim a “warm 28degrees”, which I believe is the correct temperature, but that's not warm. When the toddler pool at home is 32 you know you're in for a chilly session! Glad I did it, though, it's clean and added to a late summer holiday when the sea isn't available.

The dryer in the laundry room was hopeless all week. On the last day I went over to try it myself - and pulled out handfuls of fluff. After that it worked fine, maybe that's the trick. You are supposed to defluff them after each use, but who ever bothers?!

If you arrive after 3pm, reception is closed. Your key is under your doormat.

All in all, it was great. I'd go again and recommend them to friends.

My family and I have just returned from a lovely week staying in Chapel Cottage. As a previous reviewer notes, the cottage is a little tired in places from the constant use which is a shame because with a coat of paint inside, new/cleaned carpets and a fresh stain on the decking outside, I would have rated excellent. Also, being a family friendly cottage some kids crockery wouldn't go amiss! Overall you can't beat the location being able to walk to Shanklin, the beach and just cross the road to the park, it's great for the kids. I was also pleased with the play area being so near that the kids could play there if we weren't yet ready to go out or had got back from a day out and needed to unpack and cook dinner in peace! The pool has a separate entry code on a high keypad which prevented them from going in unless with an adult. All in all a good base for a family holiday.

stayed in hedgehogs retreat, a nice quiet accommodation in the old town of shanklin, 10 minute walk to the beach, and shops close by, indoor swimming pool/ Jacuzzi ok but small, huge park opposite with small playground and vast area of grass to run around on, Plenty of restaurants near by, staff are very helpful and friendly, a great place to stay to explore the island. we enjoyed our stay here and would have no problems booking up this complex again.

We had two weeks at Upper chine at the end of June 2013.
The location is excellent, a short walk in to Old Shanklin and the nice restaurants there, particularly Fine Nammet.
There are good facilities on site with an indoor swimming pool and indoor play area. There is also a lovely park just opposite the site, which we made use of a lot.
We stayed in Chapel House, a large 3 bed, close to the road but not at all noisy. The property was a really good size and well resourced with dish washer, washing machine, high chair, stair gate. Overall it was in good order but some areas such as the en suite need better cleaning and a bit of upkeep in terms of flaking paint. Overall the property feels a bit dated but this did not impinge on the stay. Staff were very responsive when a tap wasn't working and getting this sorted within the day.
Overall, great stay and would definitely consider coming back.
