I found this hotel by mistake as there is another hotel with the same name in Sandown. Make sure you book the one in Shanklin or you could be hugely disappointed. We spent a super weekend in the company of lovely people and I must say a huge big thank you to Bob the owner who even managed to organise the sun to shine for us, his lovely wife Ann who always seems to work so hard and not forgetting to mention Maz who served us the most delicious breakfast every morning and cream teas on the verandah mid afternoon. Nothing is too much trouble for this small hotel and it makes the world of difference. It was clean, comfortable, everything you needed was in this hotel, although a little bit more water pressure in the shower would have been nice. Small TVs are in each bedroom but the signal was weak, however we did find the comfortable TV room off the main lounge where the signal was much better to sit and watch the England vs Brazil match whilst sipping Irish coffees. Heaven. The hotel kitchen closes at 4.30 pm for the day but there are lots of restaurants serving dinner within easy walking distance on the beachfront. The lift down the cliff to the beachfront is very close by and old Shanklin town is also within easy walking distance for a spot of souvenir shopping or afternoon tea/dinner in the old thatched cottage. My advice would be to pay the extra and make sure you get one of the verandah rooms, numbers 5 and 6. They have huge verandahs with a table and 4 chairs and the views are amazing. After printing out the brochure of this hotel I looked at the photgraphs of the hotel and the view and wonderered if they had been airbrushed. After staying there I can honestly say that what you see is what you get. I have no hestitation whatsover in recommending this hotel and can't wait to spend some more time there again this year. A lovely spot, lovely hotel with lovely people.

Room Tip: Choose either room 5 or 6

We were on the Isle of Wight to celebrate a friend's 40th and booked the hotel on the basis they could accommodate us all and were offering a very competitive room rate. We arrived early on the Friday. The owner Bob welcomed us with open arms and let us into our rooms there and then.

That set the tone for the whole weekend. Bob and Anne - and everyone who worked at the hotel - went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed our stay. The rooms were immaculately clean. Breakfast was delicious as were the sandwiches we had for lunch on the second day of our stay. Nothing was too much trouble.

The hotel has a great bar, an excellent deck overlooking the sea and a beautiful garden that has won many awards.

We all thought the hotel offered good value and would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: For a small extra charge you can get a room with a balcony overlooking the sea.

If I do ever go back to the Isle Of Wight for a Holiday, I would pick The Carlton straight away. Like everyone else says, the location of the hotel and quality of views from the balcony rooms are most likely the best you will find. There are quite a few Hotels in Shanklin with balcony rooms but they seem to be larger, less intimate Hotels.

The Carlton is not small, but it's not so big as to become impersonal. I stayed in a double room the first 3 nights and then moved to one of the Balcony rooms for the next 3 nights. Both rooms were very clean and tidy with spacious bathrooms and comfy beds.

The garden is superb and well looked after. The tea deck area really adds the finishing touches to the exterior, you could take in the views all day.

Anne and Bob, the owners are helpful and very nice people, the waitress, Marylin who served us at breakfast was very nice too, everyone was looked after well.

Breakfast was very good too, it was served hot and fresh and you could have plenty more tea and toast if you wished.

All in all, I think you would struggle to find a hotel with the same features, service and with an equally impressive location in Shanklin. No hotel is perfect, but I think this is as close as you could possibly hope for.

I hope it does stay the same if I ever do choose to go back to Isle Of Wight.

Room Tip: If you can, make sure you don't miss out on the balcony rooms.

Just back from another fantastic stay at this great hotel. Hosts Bob and Anne and all their staff are friendly and welcoming, nothing is too much trouble. Breakfasts are hot made to order and plentiful with a great choice of menu. I love sitting on the Deck in their tea gardens enjoying the view and their freshly made bagettes. We had a four year old in our party and his first words when we got home was to ask when we were going back. I was delighted to tell him it would be very soon.

Great place to stay, the owners Bob & Anne were there when we arrived and gave us a quick tour of the hotel. Nothing was too much to ask, Anne kindly gave us some bedding for our travel cot as we had forgotten the base sheet. It was good to know that they would go out of their way to help especially as we were traveling with our two young boys. The room was great, heating was on full when we arrived (which I did turn down) but there is nothing worse than being cold so lovely welcome. The bathroom was like new (and I am quite picky about bathrooms) again lovely and warm and very modern & clean! all necessities were provided soap/shower gel etc. In the room the tea and coffee facilities were great and replenished (lovely hot choc by the way). Again room was modern & clean and had everything at hand. Wonderful views from the lounge, sometimes photos can be deceptive and 'rose tint' views but The Carltons views were breathtaking! so lovely to watch the passing ships day and night. There were games for the children provided in the lounge which my eldest son loved. The food was perfect, we had the same table each morning which had been very thoughtfully laid out with a childs placemat for my eldest son and lovely clean highchair for the baby. Service was prompt and friendly and food plentiful!

Would highly recommend, we will definitely stay in this hotel when we are next in Shanklin - without a doubt!

Another great point is the ferry was included in the price of the room and worked out much cheaper than if we were to do it separately, they even booked it all for us, we just said what times we wanted to travel.

Thank you very much for a great stay Bob & Anne!

Room Tip: only stayed in the one room which was on the side of the hotel but was perfect no view but great all...

I returned to the Carlton Hotel 10 years after my first stay along with my Fiance. Everything was perfect from the minute we arrived to the second we left.
We had one of the balcony rooms that give you a fantastic view of Shanklin Bay and although due to the weather we never got to sit out on the balcony it was lovely clear blue skies and you could see out for miles.
The room was fab, cosy and comfortable and we both slept really well, breakfasts were just what we asked for and nothing was too much trouble.
We certainly wont be waiting for another 10 years to go back again but we will hopefully go on a warmer week :)
Would recommend this wonderful hotel to anyone who wants to visit this lovely island.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 6 lovely balcony room
