“Brilliant Place to Stay”
Reviewed 26 June 2013

We were delighted with the room and the stay. Ann was brilliant, made us feel at home and was very attentive and friendly without being intrusive. The room was very clean and well decorated and had a balcony, overlooking the sea. This cost extra and we were lucky with the weather and were able to sit out each morning and evening, watching the boats on the sea. There is also a deck in front of the lounge and bar to sit out on. Shanklin is hilly and we were at the top of a hill, so it is great for walking. Our only minor disappointment with the room was that the shower was hand-held, but all the rest of the stay was so good that it didn't really matter. Breakfast was included in the price and was good. They also have lots of offers on their website and do stay and ferry deals too. Very highly recommended!

Room Tip: Pay extra for one of the balcony rooms and enjoy the view!

My husband & I, together with a friend, have just returned from our first break at the Carlton Hotel. As previous visitors have said before, Anne & Bob went out of their way to look after us. Nothing was too much trouble. The rooms are nicely decorated with top-notch ensuites. Everything was spotlessly clean & the breakfasts lovely & plentiful! Maz who served us was always bright & cheerful & got us off to a good start to each day. Unfortunately the weather was atrocious but we have already booked to return again later in the year & hope for the usual IOW sunshine to have come back by then!

Nothing was too much trouble for the owners of this Hotel to make our stay enjoyable and comfortable. We were welcomed with open arms and they remained open until we left! Breakfast was lovely with plenty of choice, even for the children. The view from the terrace was outstanding and the garden areas were beautiful. We are returning again this year and would not hesitate to recommend all ages to this wonderful B&B!

Room Tip: Balcony Rooms are superb for the view Great Family Rooms with excellent facilities

I found this hotel by mistake as there is another hotel with the same name in Sandown. Make sure you book the one in Shanklin or you could be hugely disappointed. We spent a super weekend in the company of lovely people and I must say a huge big thank you to Bob the owner who even managed to organise the sun to shine for us, his lovely wife Ann who always seems to work so hard and not forgetting to mention Maz who served us the most delicious breakfast every morning and cream teas on the verandah mid afternoon. Nothing is too much trouble for this small hotel and it makes the world of difference. It was clean, comfortable, everything you needed was in this hotel, although a little bit more water pressure in the shower would have been nice. Small TVs are in each bedroom but the signal was weak, however we did find the comfortable TV room off the main lounge where the signal was much better to sit and watch the England vs Brazil match whilst sipping Irish coffees. Heaven. The hotel kitchen closes at 4.30 pm for the day but there are lots of restaurants serving dinner within easy walking distance on the beachfront. The lift down the cliff to the beachfront is very close by and old Shanklin town is also within easy walking distance for a spot of souvenir shopping or afternoon tea/dinner in the old thatched cottage. My advice would be to pay the extra and make sure you get one of the verandah rooms, numbers 5 and 6. They have huge verandahs with a table and 4 chairs and the views are amazing. After printing out the brochure of this hotel I looked at the photgraphs of the hotel and the view and wonderered if they had been airbrushed. After staying there I can honestly say that what you see is what you get. I have no hestitation whatsover in recommending this hotel and can't wait to spend some more time there again this year. A lovely spot, lovely hotel with lovely people.

Room Tip: Choose either room 5 or 6

We were on the Isle of Wight to celebrate a friend's 40th and booked the hotel on the basis they could accommodate us all and were offering a very competitive room rate. We arrived early on the Friday. The owner Bob welcomed us with open arms and let us into our rooms there and then.

That set the tone for the whole weekend. Bob and Anne - and everyone who worked at the hotel - went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed our stay. The rooms were immaculately clean. Breakfast was delicious as were the sandwiches we had for lunch on the second day of our stay. Nothing was too much trouble.

The hotel has a great bar, an excellent deck overlooking the sea and a beautiful garden that has won many awards.

We all thought the hotel offered good value and would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: For a small extra charge you can get a room with a balcony overlooking the sea.

If I do ever go back to the Isle Of Wight for a Holiday, I would pick The Carlton straight away. Like everyone else says, the location of the hotel and quality of views from the balcony rooms are most likely the best you will find. There are quite a few Hotels in Shanklin with balcony rooms but they seem to be larger, less intimate Hotels.

The Carlton is not small, but it's not so big as to become impersonal. I stayed in a double room the first 3 nights and then moved to one of the Balcony rooms for the next 3 nights. Both rooms were very clean and tidy with spacious bathrooms and comfy beds.

The garden is superb and well looked after. The tea deck area really adds the finishing touches to the exterior, you could take in the views all day.

Anne and Bob, the owners are helpful and very nice people, the waitress, Marylin who served us at breakfast was very nice too, everyone was looked after well.

Breakfast was very good too, it was served hot and fresh and you could have plenty more tea and toast if you wished.

All in all, I think you would struggle to find a hotel with the same features, service and with an equally impressive location in Shanklin. No hotel is perfect, but I think this is as close as you could possibly hope for.

I hope it does stay the same if I ever do choose to go back to Isle Of Wight.

Room Tip: If you can, make sure you don't miss out on the balcony rooms.
