This is a very good B&B - nice quiet position in a pretty part of Old Shanklin, lovely house, breakfast room and lounges attractively furnished and decorated, quiet gardens with loungers, swimming pool and very welcoming owners. There is also adequate car parking on site which is not often the case in Shanklin.
We stayed just the one night and booked a Classic Double room a bit last minute via booking.com. (possibly the only room left as Fernbank appeared to be full). Because the Classic Double wasn't classed as the smallest room but "medium" we were a bit disappointed with the size of the room. There wasn't enough room for two bedside tables and it was rather cramped. Having looked again at the booking.com website which gives precise room dimensions, I would opt for the larger king sized bed rooms which cost not much more but would obviously be more comfortable.
Our room also had a problem with the floor boards adjacent to the bed which creaked very badly, and an overhead shower fitting rather than a hosing body spray in the bath would improve the bathroom considerably (you cannot have a proper shower whilst holding a spray attachment).
Having said that, the room was very clean and nicely decorated.
Breakfast was very good, hot food nicely cooked, lovely waitress, no complaints there at all.
On reflection I would like to give the owners of Fernbank, their breakfast room, lounges and gardens 5 stars, and their room probably 3 stars so hence the 4 star rating. So choose your room with care and you will enjoy Fernbank no problem.
