“A pleasant retreat in a fantastic sea-view location.”
Reviewed 28 September 2012

We had a lovely welcome on arrival from Sophie (Reception) who showed us to our very nice room (No 3) with a magnificent sea-view and balcony. The bed was a bit hard and the shower very weak - In fact we couldn't get it to work properly at all on the first night. Below our balcony was a splendid mature garden with topiary and lily ponds from which a pathway led to the Esplanade and beach. Dinner was 'alright', not 'great'. On the second night my baked cod was overcooked and thus tough and chewy! Service was quick although a bit amateurish at times (the wine waiter said he didn't like wine and after sticking our bottle up his nose he said that to him it smelt like cider!); but breakfast was indeed 'great'. At times the tap water tasted like disinfectant so I would advise guests to have bottled water in their rooms - especially for morning tea! There was a good indoor heated pool and a hot tub which we enjoyed each day. On the whole we enjoyed ourselves - The location contributed 50% to this.

couldnt fault the hotel at all, the staff were brilliant, the room was good with a sea view, nice facilities, nothing to complain about at all imo. it is also very well located, nice and quiet at night and within a 5 min walk of the town itself and shanklin chine too.

Room Tip: we paid extra for a sea view, well worth it in my opinion

The hotel is very tired and in much need of refurbishment. The room was very tired and the bedding on the single bed in our room smelt very musty and as if it hadn't been changed from the last people that stayed there. The only saving grace was the breakfast which was good but apart from that we didn't feel the hotel was worth the money we paid for it and will not be returning.

After four nights camping at Bestival we were looking forward to a night in a proper bed! Our room was clean and comfortable although as other posters have pointed out, some areas and corridors are a bit scruffy (particularly the games room) and could do with some refurbishment. The shower curtain was nearly falling off the wall.

Had a good night's sleep with no noise (at the front of the hotel) and a great vegetarian full English breakfast in the morning. The bar area and dining room are in a better state and would be great in the winter with the log fire. Staff were friendly and helpful.

The hotel is in a very quiet area about 10 minutes walk from the Old Village/Shanklin Chine/the beach, and 20 minutes from the town centre and railway station. Although we didn't use them the hotel has indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a sauna.

The staff were warm, friendly and polite. However the state of the decor (scuffed paintwork & peeling wallpaper) is to be desired, the walls need to be redecorated. We stayed in the superior sea facing room which had been refurbished & was lovely & clean except for some cobwebs on the lampshades. The views and location were excellent!

*First impressions*
Tired, needs refurbishment, waiting staff should learn to write things down so they don't forget your wishes.

The hotel frontage is kept up together however other areas had peeling paint on exterior surfaces, rust stains, it probably hasn't been painted since our last visit 6 years ago.

*Accommodation*
I paid over £400 HB for two nights stay as this was a birthday treat for my wife, we stayed in room 2 described as an executive sea-facing room.

The room was large and, it has a four-poster bed with clean, crisp fresh linen and was very comfortable, when laid on, unfortunately you are presented with a stained ceiling with the paper starting to detach itself.

It was nice to have a fridge, dressing gown and a bowl of fruit.

The room has French windows but only the left hand side door worked, the maintenance man said previous occupants had mentioned it and it was going to be fixed. Unfortunately they turned up the next day just after 4pm when we were going to take a nap after a long day's walking. As it turned out they fixed a different problem and the right hand door still didn't open.

The French windows open up to a balcony with a lovely view, a bit limited to the left as there is another balcony about 15ft further out and 10ft higher which means the occupants look down on you and straight onto your bed so draw your curtains if you are after some privacy.

There is an adjoining balcony with just a single chain dividing, no privacy at all. It is a fire escape route but the hotel could have easily made the exit to the left rather than to the right and provide better privacy.

The en suite was again very clean, we didn't get to use the spa-bath so cannot comment, but it looked good. The shower was good although it seemed to take an age for the hot water to arrive, there was a problem with the shower-head which meant you could not get a good drenching unless you were standing 6" from the tiles.

The TV was fiddly and used a Freeview box for the signal, ours didn't work properly and credit to the hotel they replaced it with a new one. Their maintenance man admitted they had purchased a job lot from eBay and they were all failing!

*Gardens*
We had a good view, generally quite pretty but we saw a member cutting off all the beautiful bulrushes, we are not sure why as other wise the pond was quite unattractive. The garden has 6 large beautiful topiary bushes which are ruined by extremely bad pruning, just look on Google images, they need to get in some professionals to save them.

We didn't use the pool but walked through the enclosure a couple of times, the pool was deserted, and the plastic furniture looked worn out. From the pool you can hear plenty of activity and children in the hotel next door, this just added to the feeling that this hotel is a has-been.

We strolled down to the putting lawns but you would be lucky to get the ball to rum more than a couple of inches as it hadn't been mown for a while.

*Staff*
All staff were cheery and made you feel very welcome but we had several problems with the food and service.

*Food and restaurant*
The menu is very limited for choice, out of 6 mains, 2 are vegetarian and on one evening, one of the mains was sold out after less than an hour so the choice was even less varied for meat eaters.

On the first evening we were served the wrong wine, we didn't realise until a glass each in, the next evening the waiter remembered what we ordered the night before but we pointed out that was not what was delivered to the table. To his credit we were only charged for the bottle we actually had. The bread they serve is awful, more like cake, I think the brown was marginally better than the white

On our first morning we had to wait about 40 minutes for our cooked breakfast as they had forgotten about us.I put this down to the change over of staff at around 8am?

The full English breakfast was a bit stodgy and made with poor quality ingredients. The bacon was particularly bad and very, very fatty.

The meal on the second night was better although they forgot my wife's salad. By the time you see a waiter again it's too late, you have finished your meal. The service was very slow and dis-jointed. My overriding memory of the restaurant were the complaints and the waiter saying "sorry about that" in his strong voice that could be heard in every corner of the restaurant. We heard many other people sat closely complaining between themselves.

*Reception*
Lovely staff, the receptionist on checkout was very polite and apologetic about the problems we had, unfortunately that didn't help assuage our disappointment of our overall experience.

I really cannot, honestly, recommend this hotel, especially if you are paying premium rates like we did.

Maybe, after refurbishment and some staff training we would go back.

Just returned from a four day break. Stayed in a superior sea view room -- spacious and comfortable with a fantastic view. Have been several times but am beginning to have mixed feelings. Location is fantastic - staff all friendly and helpful but food unimaginative and general areas really are looking very tired. May try another hotel next year!

Room Tip: Worth paying extra for a superior room - we stayed in 21.
