“Has the return-pull factor”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2013

Honestly, we booked it for the reasonable prices. I was pleasantly surprised by the stay. We stayed two nights in July.

Good points: very very clean, fresh linen with lovely fragrance, hot electric shower that doesn't cut out/go cold, comfy bed, well stocked tea and coffee tray. It was a pleasure to come back for the night and sleep well. Avril was really lovely and helpful. The living room was really cosy and homely- had we stayed longer, I'd loved to have a late evening sitting there and reading in those comfy chairs. The location is two minute stroll from the esplanade with cliff views of the sea, short and very pleasant walk to the shanklin chine, the beach and all the restaurants along there.

Room for improvement: breakfast options were limited. It seems Avril works like crazy to cater for the guests on her own, which is by her own design as breakfast is served at 8:30 for everyone. This meant tea, toast and hot breakfast would dribble out at different stages. Portions were on the light side - I'm used to loading up on breakfast when I'm on holiday so that I can do a lot before I get hungry again. No baked beans and I was too shy to ask about it. :-P

Overall it was the best experience I've had for a guest house in that price range and would be strongly in favour of returning there next time I'm in IoW.

My wife and i have been staying at Claremont for several years and would go no where else. From the moment you are met at the door you are made to feel welcome. The rooms are all clean and well maintained the beds comfortable. The food is all home cooked and well presented in a cosy dining room and you are served by Avril who is always bright and cheerful morning and evening. You will find Claremont in a quiet road just ten minutes walk from Shanklin seafront and close to the old village.Avril and Dennis are always on hand to help if you have a problem or just want to chat. So if you are looking for somewhere to stay that gives you value for money take our advice and head for Claremont you will nor regret it.

We stayed for 5 days last week and were not impressed. Averill (Owner) was very friendly but was let down by everything else. Promotional literature stated a full English breakfast. You had to order 24 hours in advance as the menu was full of OR's. Fruit juice OR cereal OR cooked! The cooked breakfast over the week never had a fried egg and bacon on the same day. It was fried, scrambled, or poached. Fried bread once otherwise waffles or hash browns. The only items we got everyday were a small tomato and a cardboard sausage. On one day mine was served with the comment that she was sorry but it was overcooked! In the room we had to co-ordinate our movement around as there was very little space. There was no room for even a small chair or anywhere to lay clothes or a laptop. One of the twin beds was very uncomfortable with springs sticking up. The on-suite was very small and difficult to dry oneself after a shower (no bath) without bashing your elbows on something. Saw a few Matalan labels on items which I think sums the room up. Items were there but not of a very good quality. Just make do. Our room only had a shower and EVERY morning it cut out when somebody else in the house turned on a tap or flushed the loo. It would then splutter very hot water before running cold before it got up to the set hot temperature. It was dangerous and very annoying. When this was mentioned to Averill she said that it’s all the old pipes around here and the other Hotels.
The whole experience would have been a lot more enjoyable for us if some small amendments were to be made: Fruit juice AND if required cereal, and a proper FULL English breakfast. It seams to cater for the older generations who have memories of a landlady kicking you out after breakfast and not allowing you back in until evening meal time. To them it must seem like heaven!

A friend and I recently visited the Isle of Wight for the music festival. Our hotel options were limited and we came across the Claremont. The location is a short block from the shore with excellent views! The owner of the house couldn't have been more accommodating! The place was extremely clean and the beds comfortable. Breakfast each morning was "made to order" with a few options. We cannot comment enough on the level of service we received. My friend actually left her passport behind and the people at the Claremont were nice enough to bring it 30 minutes up to the ferry so she should come and pick it up. Amazing. Definitely worth the price. Thanks for a making our visit enjoyable!

3 Night stay at the Claremont Guesthouse in April. The house is immaculate in a beautiful little spot. To be fair what makes this the perfect place is the hosts. Its kind of like stopping with old friends rather than owners of a hotel. We seriously cannot recommend this Shanklin gem enough.
