“Excellent, good value, comfortable accommodation”
Reviewed 28 August 2013

Dean and I stayed at Foxhills last week for a couple of days - the proprietors James and Paula were lovely, very accommodating and flexible. They were very kind in changing dates required for our holiday at quite short notice and were very understanding.
Breakfast was outstanding! Lots of choice!
Room was clean, comfortable and beautifully decorated there was everything you needed for a good stay!
Definitely recommended for a good base to see the Isle of Wight.
Thank you.

My husband and I stayed at The Foxhills for 2 nights. We arrived early at 11.15 and was greeted by James who offered us tea. He showed us around and we were in our room by 11.30. Everywhere was lovely and clean and nothing seemed to much trouble. Breakfast was freshly cooked and very nice. Got to use the spa one afternoon and was very relaxing. Would definitely go back again.

Ferry crossing booked, local restaurant rating system & bookings undertaken, request for ice tea noted and provided the next day, using our preferred choice of names, carrying the heavy bags up to the room before we could blink, newspapers and magazines, homemade jams and preserves, fresh fruit selection, etc. etc. all on top of a really nice place to stay...oh and did I mention the spa pool / Jacuzzi?

James and Paula are great hosts - James in particular is the 'face' of Foxhills but it is clear that he is not alone as the very clean rooms and common areas along with an excellent breakfast quality is testimony to see! James set the scene well before we even arrived when he offered to book our ferry crossing for us and also sent a text to let us know that one of the Isle festivals might cause some traffic problems on our way over to them. This continued during our stay when he offered helpful advice on where we could eat; watch the footy and so on. I think this is what was once referred to as service with a smile :)

The room were very nice also, ours was the Carisbrooke which had a dual aspect over front and side, a very large king size bed, separate dressing area and again separate bathroom. Our friends stayed in the Osborne room, which featured a 4-poster bed, with a front aspect and were also happy with their room choice.

The hotel was easy to find being a short walk out of the main road in the centre of Shanklin, so a short stroll up each night and we had a wide choice of pubs and restaurants at our disposal...the old village has some beautiful 'chocolate box' buildings as settings for many of the eateries and hostelries to take in whilst there (although bookings are pretty much essential in high season).

The hotel has a spa pool and this was a nice way to relax and soak the muscles after a decent afternoon walk. There are also massages and other treatments available on site but if you are interested in these I suggest booking in advance as there were no available sessions for our stay with our optimistic one day in advance inquiry.

Breakfast was superb - all the usual choices plus more and done to the highest standard - our friends who joined us had just spent a week on the isle walking around its perimeter coastline and had stayed somewhere different each night and they said that Foxhills had by far the best breakfast on their stay. I cannot compare in the same way but I have to say that the quality was very high indeed and it is clear why they have won awards for this.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay - it was perfect for our needs in general but the friendliness and thoughtfulness of our hosts made sure we were wanting for nothing at all. There was only one small thing that I would mention and that was that the water pressure for the shower in our room was not that great and so washing long hair in the shower was a bit of a challenge. This did not distract from what was overall a very nice stay at Foxhills and on the Isle of Wight in general - stay here and you will be very well looked after indeed.

Room Tip: The Carisbrooke has a separate dressing room and even a separate bathroom

I cannot rave about this place enough. The service is second to none, James and Paula cannot do enough for you and it is always just done. There is never a faff or a tut, it is just done. The breakfasts are amazing and we had lunch there too one day. Although, not the cheapest lunch, Paula is a genius in the kitchen. Proper home cooked food, served with a smile. We simply called them, ordered our food and then got a call when the food was ready. Popped down and ate it all.

Another example of great service. It rained heavily whilst we were there (on a cycling break), my boot's cover got wet and started to smell bad. It needed to be dried. All we asked for was some nice smelling fabric spray and they offered to dry the shelf in the drying room. Our bikes were kept securely on the premises.

They also have their own review system and read these reviews as they could offer up very specific insight into the various restaurants and things to do.

The room was a little cramped, however, for a few days it is perfectly acceptable. Honestly, James and Paula make this place a real home for you. I have never felt more at home whilst away from home. The shower pressure was also a little low, I think they are using a device to save water and that has caused the drop in pressure. The hot tub is really nice. Very hot and helps soothe the aches and pains that the hills of the Island bring.

Thank you both for your lovely hospitality and kindness. This is one bed and breakfast that I shall not forget. Hope to see you again.

Room Tip: Just ask James or Paula, they are very good with responding to emails and other forms of communicati...

James and Paula gave us a warm welcome on arrival and their attention to our needs continued throughout our stay. The breakfast in the morning was spectacular with plenty of choice. The room was great. Their system of getting guests to rate the local restaurants meant we had lots of reviews to help us select where to eat of an evening.
